Rooting a Monstera Deliciosa cutting

I've been rooting a monstera cutting in water for the past two weeks, its areal root has got a fair bit longer and its developed these little brown bumps. Does this all seem pretty normal? This is my first time rooting a cutting so I'm unsure of how it should be looking. Also, what can I expect from it? What signs should I look out for before I pot it up? Thanks in advance!

Hi Amy,

Your cutting looks fine, the light-colored tip on the root indicates new growth so all is well. The brownish bumps are normal. Personally I would leave it in water until spring, even til late spring when temps are consistently warm. Then pot into a well-draining mix that will dry out fairly fast.

Based on the distance between nodes on the stem, I think your cutting is likely a variety of M. deliciosa called Borsigiana and not the big full-size species. It is smaller, faster growing and more vine-like. If you know the source of your cutting, what was the size of leaves on the parent plant?

Hi Russ,

Thanks so much for your response, that's so helpful! I got the cutting from a friend of my Mum, Mum tells me that the plant it comes from's leaves are roughly the same size as the ones on my cutting, none are too much bigger, so I think you're right about it being a Borsiginia

One of the major functions of aerials is to seek out something to grab a hold of as an anchor point to climb from as they grow up the side of a tree(or whatever is handy). If you take a drinking straw and put a slice all the way down it(handy for removal later),you can train them to go where you want them to go. Best bet is to direct them back into the container.
