using the automatic fertilization for other things
Comments (1)You cannot use pesticides (fungicides, insecticides, etc.) that must be sprayed onto foliage in a way that distributes the chemical into the soil system. Not only will it not work, but it's not environmentally sound. If the garden work is cumbersome, you may want to consider cutting back a little next year. Or, evaluate the kind of sprayer that you are using. Be sure that you are following smart gardening practices that help prevent certain plant problems, too. Good horticultural practices (fostering the soil, housekeeping, proper watering, etc.) go a long way in making our outdoor tasks easier....See MoreThe things we do for our plants....
Comments (25)Why Arundo donax is possibly the finest bioenergy crop available for a variety of uses: High energy content - 8,000-8,400 Btu per lb. High yield - 20-25 tons per acre Year round production - 2 harvests per field per year. Rapid Growth crowds out weeds Significant soil carbon sequestration. Low Fertilizer requirement- extensive perennial root system. Perennial No annual tillage or planting. No Pesticides are necessary. No net CO2 emissions Zero net carbon emissions to atmosphere. Provides habitat for wildlife. Prevents soil erosion. Can be grown on marginal lands in semi-arid conditions. C3 and C4 Photosynthetic pathway traits Constant energy ratio/conversion factorization. Quite impressive! Lou...See MoreWhat IS this thing??!! It doesn't die no matter what we do?
Comments (12)I hate using chemicals on anything, but I have to agree that Ken's method is very handy and I have adopted it. I put undiluted roundup in a dropper bottle, then cut the offender at/near ground level then drop RU on the cut stump. Done and done. I use very little chemical and none of it sprays around to unwanted places. The cats can follow me around as I'm doing this and I don't worry. I don't feel an urge to take a huge shower after doing this - it's as clean as one can be while tackling an unpleasant task. I've started doing this on non-woody plants like thistles and it works too. Good luck!...See MoreCrazy things we do for our hostas
Comments (16)I perfectly understand all of your stories! Thanks for sharing! It makes me feel a little less "crazy!" Nicholsworth, I'd love to have another "crazy" neighbor. (LOL) I have put unused planters over my plants in the spring but no one else seems to be too concerned about the frost warning. A picture of your neighbor's yard would have been wonderful to see! Don't forget to take a picture next time! Frogged said: "Hmm, nothing crazy here folks just some gardeners doing what gardeners do." Well I understand what gardeners do, but do all those nongardeners? Frogged, you do a lot of work for your garden and for selling. Keep up the good work! ConnieMay, yes you can join the "crazy" bunch of us! LOL Pattie, I would be tempted to cover my plants with an umbrella to protect them from the sun tool Luckily I have some shade from my trees....See Morestacey_mb
