Need Ideas for Living Room Layout

Need to buy furniture for living room, but am trying to figure out the best layout. Am open to all seating arrangements (sectional, sofa, chairs, etc). My husband would love a recliner, and would prefer the TV mounted in the corner. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Why does he want the TV in the corner? Is it so everyone can see it from the dining room too or some other reason? How many people will use the room regularly?

Yes, he likes the idea of seeing it from the dining room, as well as it just being a personal preference. I told him it would more than likely end up on the large wall, and he's not opposed to it, just doesn't love it. There are 3 people using the room regularly.

Do a floor plan and make the smaller angled end of the room the dining area. As is now the table and chairs are wasting a lot of precious space. You can leave the t v where it is. With an app, have the screen become art work, or a simulated fireplace…. Put a sofa on the solid wall with floor lamps, sleek coffee table, with a colorful rug under, and two small swivel chairs to complete the vignette. Swivel chairs are valuable to your space, as they can turn toward both the sofa and the t v.

Obviously the pano lens for realty pix has warped perspective a bit. At least with the TV on the longer wall you could watch from the breakfast nook. As I said above, I would float a sectional in the center of the room with one wing facing the TV on that big wall and the other facing the windows/view. The free standing wall would make a great spot for a tall piece of casegoods like a bookcase or secretary. Are you buying all new furniture or using what you have? Maybe we need to see pix of your stuff that you're contemplating using here.

I find coffee tables to be a huge waste of space and hardly ever used. I much prefer tiny side tables at each end of each seating unit. Another problem with coffee tables is that if they have sharp corners, I'm certainly going to run into them and get nice big bruises on my legs! If you insist on having a middle coffee table, get a round upholstered ottoman and put a large tray on it for drinks and remotes. It can double as seating if you have guests. Regarding lighting, ceiling lights don't do anyone any favors in the living room. Much better (to start off with) is a table lamp or wall sconce in each corner at chest height. Lighting is very important for atmosphere. Please give it the respect that it deserves. For wall decor, look for a local artist, art gallery, or some colleges have their own art museums. Art is very personal. Take your time and get pieces you really love. If you don't get anywhere with my first sugegstions, try art.com. Get a print from them and get it framed locally in plexiglass (lighter and safer than glass) where you live.

Does "formal" imply you have another space for tv watching? A family room? Or is this the only room for tv? If the former? Make the tv more secondary........use an adjacent wall. Better by far as the need for built in expense will be less, and same with media console and tv. As below...and I will hope that is the case. - you've another tv spot. Truly....... the view into the room is far better this way in EITHER case. A room needs to make CONVERSATION possible; nobody wants to shout at another off in the distance. And that love seat can just as easily be two VERY comfortable chairs. One quarter inch to a foot below. Don't forget a great rug.....9 x 12. Lighting matters.......art matters. : ) The very last thing you need? An accent wall via paint. One paint color will do it.....please. You will get more help if you post some inspo pics of rooms/styles you love. There are no mind readers here...

Use an articulating arm mount for the TV. Just showing mount idea, not anything else. I happen to think the large LR wall is where it belongs. Do you want a hidden TV or will you use it as a focal point most of the time?

What is your style? I'm no pro. I would put a long sofa or possibly a sofa with ottoman or chaise at the end facing the TV wall. Float the sofa with plenty of room to not block the stairway and for people to walk behind the sofa comfortably. Use a large area rug. Long low console under the TV. Then two chairs flanking the sofa with a large coffee table in front of the sofa and one small accent/side tables at each chair. Something like this below
