installing a chunky chair rail
Comments (29)No pics yet, I had to attend a function this afternoon so I didn't get much done except for a much needed total cleanup. I started caulking but ran out of motivation. Sanded caulk is a pain to work with. No cherris, Bill, just some sore fingers from working the grout in the non-flat joints. For the record, I wore one high quality grout glove on my left hand to work the grout, no glove on the right. I started out with two but it was uncomfortable pushing the float with a gloved hand. Plus my right hand was sweating profusely and dripping all over the place making my grout extra moist. I figured that was not good, and it was gross too. I will finish up caulking in the morning and post pics, probably on a new thread so we can skip all this other junk. Oh, and thanks for the compliments so far. Comments (15)Be sure that you install your lighting at the front of the cabinet, not the back. At the front, it illuminates the counter. At the back it illuminates the backsplash and causes shadows. Mine are xenon pucks. (If you get LED, make sure they aren't "blue," but a warm color. The first ones that came out were too blue. I can't help with brands, though) I suppose the pucks do give off uneven light, but it isn't something I notice. I probably would more if that's the only lights I had on. But I love light and I have them all on. The undercabinet lights have a beautiful color and everything looks so sparkley, even a drainer of dishes! My cabinets had a false bottom put in and the pucks are in that, although they still do come below the bottom by not quite 1/2 inch. There's more stuff that had to go into that hidden space besides just the pucks - wiring, an electrical box, etc. I still have a light right, but it is very shallow. I can't see the pucks when I am standing, but from sitting at the kitchen table, I can, although like beekeeperswife, I don't mind that. Sorry about your BIL and his comments and lack of compliments. And about DH not standing up for you or standing with you....See MoreRefinishing stair handrail and spindles

Comments (11)metromom the difference was the product I used. The gel stain I had been using looked OK until direct sunlight or bright light hit it and then every brush mark showed - horrible! The finish chips very easily. The gel stain is somewhat opaque so the grain of the wood tends to disappear too! Polyshades is not at all like a gel stain. It is a stain/poly product and is more transparent than gel stain. I was concerned that it wouldn't provide enough of a color change but it did! The stool in the photo has had only one coat, no rubbing off. The instructions say to apply only a very thin coat and repeat if necessary. I think this is essential for a good result, especially on vertical surfaces, as Polyshades is quite thin and runs easily. If you trust that the color WILL change and make sure you apply a very thin coat only at a time I think it is pretty easy to have great results....See MoreP Banos
