Fire pit location
Comments (7)Alicate, I live in an area where evenings are often not only chilly but windy as well. I love the outdoors and convincing my husband to sit outside and relax with a glass of wine at the end of the day has always been difficult because of the chill. I thought a fire pit would be a solution and bought a portable one thinking I could use it at different seating locations on our property. What I quickly learned was it burnt and killed the grass below and the smoke from the fire pit was always blowing relentlessly at someone no matter how many times we rearranged our seating. Having given up on the fire pit I was thrilled when I saw a relative had solved the smoke issue by using an old pot belly stove (American chiminea) they had found in their tool shed. It didn't take me too long before I found and dragged home an old rusty pb stove that did a great job keeping us warm but admittedly was an ugly beast that didn't quite fit in with the patio furniture or even the Adirondack lawn chairs, so as we are replacing out of necessity our old patio we are adding a fireplace...now if this doesnÂt work I suppose I will have to learn to drink my wine in front of the tv. Personally I would suggest that you don't locate your fire pit close to your deck and house as frankly the last thing you want is smoke being drafted into an open house window. I also think that the fire pit is a destination wouldn't it be nice if you had not only a patio area where people liked to gather but the fire pit area as well. The seating for the fire pit will come over time don't base your decision on where your picnic table is. Katy...See MoreFire Bowls and Fire pits?
Comments (4)I utilize fire rings from Cunningham Gas Products. On firebowls I use the 6" and on firepits I use the 18" or larger depending on the size of the firepit. If your placing the firebowl on top of a pool beam you must use a sleeve through the gunite and then run a copper tube through the sleeve. Noble Tile has some fire bowls that range from very affordable to very expensive. Try Googling Noble swimming pool tile for their website. I would definitely suggest using a plumber to make your gas installation on either of these features. This is a job for Pro's, many people have no idea of just how volatile Natural Gas is. Comments (13)I find it weird to have a courtyard and firepit on the front of the house. That's a backyard feature to enjoy in privacy, not on display to the neighborbood. A it of a zen garden, with some Japanese maples and shrubs would work much better to ground the home than the current unnatural meatballs. Where do visitors park and approach the home? I don't see any clues as to direct someone to gracefully enter the home, unless there is no off street parking and you expect people to park on the street?. That is what the landscaping should create---a sense of direction and welcoming. A fire pit in that sense is actually kind of scary and forbidding! Painting bricks creates a maintenence nightmare, whereas unpainted brick is almost maintenence free. It's also a natural material that looks at home in a wooded setting. Almost Asian inspired, with the cedar and original brick. The painted versions look unnatural and trying too hard to be on top of a current color scheme that will date a heck of a lot faster than the honesty of natural materials in a natural state....See MoreGas Firepit repel bugs?
Comments (3)Not an expert, but did a little research, and the short answer is no, gas fire pits do not seem to repel bugs in the same way as a wood fire pit (I.e. smoke) does. In fact, it seems that the light might actually help attract them. There are some other ways to help repel mosquitoes and other pests though, so you can still enjoy your gas fire pit Options include having an electronic bug zapper, using citronella candles/torches, having plants around that naturally repel mosquitoes, and wearing a DEET based mosquito repellent.
