I don't know if I posted my email address some place where I shouldn't have or someone has it out for me, but I've been getting so much junk mail for the last couple of months or so. Yesterday I had six just in the morning. They go to my junk file, but new ones I have to tag as junk mail before they do. So I'm reading all about weird remedies, Shark Tank news, and sex toys! ugh.

Is there another way to block them? or perhaps another email alert sound to tell me to not bother? There are instances where messages of a person I know will go to junk mail so I still feel a need to open up the file and check.

Did you try scrolling down to the bottom of the mail and choosing don't contact me again? Or remove me from the mailing list?

No! Please don't ever do that. It just tells them that they've hit a real address, which they can sell to other spammers. The only time you should ever click Unscribe-type links is if you are 100% sure that email came from a company you normally do business with. And even then, it's risky because it might be a phish.

First and foremost, NEVER EVER give your social security number or date of birth out to anyone you're not looking at face to face and know fully. While, I know GardenParty people are savvy enough to know this, someone else reading it might fall prey. Secondly, most of this stuff is urban legend. But more importantly, the link tells you the true way to get rid callers and mail, the right way. Excerpt from the link: "Returning junk mail to direct mailers on their dime (by stuffing it back into their postage-paid return envelopes) may cost them some money and provide you with a bit of personal satisfaction, but it won't cut down on the amount of junk mail you receive. In fact, it may actually increase your junk mail load, since the primary metric used to gauge the effectiveness of many direct mail campaigns is the number of responses received (even if those responses are negative). The best way to decrease the amount of unsolicited mail you receive is to register with the Direct Marketing Association's (DMA) Mail Preference Service (MPS). The DMA maintains a "do not mail" file of MPS registrants which they regularly update and send to their members, who are required to remove the listed entries from their rosters of prospective customers targeted for mailings. I also got the Logee's catalog but haven't opened it (not that I don't want to). I'm beginning to look around at all of the houseplants vacationing outside, and how they've grown. Then I look at the indoor living space where they'll winter over and I try to control the panic. It's going to be crowded in here! I will NOT buy another cane begonia. No, I will NOT! And the Christmas cacti! My ancient one (of several), bloomed last Thanksgiving, and then Christmas, and then Easter, and Memorial Day. Among free services I think Outlook.com has a setting that allows the user some time to recover messages deleted from the Trash folder. But if this setting had not already been enabled, then the mail is likely gone for good. :-( But if you find the setting already enabled, you should be able to recover some email. Perhaps up to a week? With other services (Gmail, AOL, Yahoo, etc.) you're likely out of luck. On the email app that I use, I can block certain email addresses. I did this for junk mail I was getting and have received virtually none since then.

Yes, and most email programs will let you set up rules. So you could make a rule that anything that has, say, "Shark Tank" in the subject line goes straight to the trash.

ETA Thanks, mamapinky. And you should also never bounce spam, because one of two things happens when you do that:

1. If the spammers didn't hide their real address, again they know they found a live one. (They usually random generate email addresses they send to, knowing that some will turn out to be real.)

2. Or what happens most often is that the poor hapless person whose address they spoofed as the sender gets thousands and thousands of bounced emails, while the spammers are free of them.

FWIW, Houzz generates a lot of spam. If I go through a thread here about replacing old windows, for example, within an hour I start getting spam about Anderson windows and such.
