Hosta V 2017
Comments (30)Steve and newhostalady: Thanks for your comments on Vulcan. I saw lovely hosta on a garden tour, took a pic of it, and then tried to figure out what it was. The home owner tried to help by going through her labels in her binder but this hosta wasn't there. Eventually I showed it to Lynn at Shades of Green and she thought it was Vulcan or Enterprise so I checked them both out and decided on Vulcan....See MoreHosta Z 2017
Comments (20)I had bought two ZZ plants for my office at work. One at westward window and one in the office near the printer (I always put plants around the printer to collect the fine dust). The one near the printer grew much better than the one on the windowsill (another shade tolerant plant)...But in the office they got really dusty with time and so I carried them outside into the rain for a few times and then gave them away. I'd love to get one for my home but it is like outside, everything covered with plants and no room left...Lat week I made divisions of a large old Sanseveria and need to find new homes for them now. What a pity you are all so far away :-)...See MoreHosta Giants 2017
Comments (31)Great Giants. My biggest giant counting both leaf and mound is probably Niagara Falls. One year when I was measuring there were quite a few leaves above 17 inches. It survived being transplanted a few years ago and now has the advantage of having elbow room - a rarity in my garden. Green Gables (Sum and Sub sport) leaves have gotten to over 20" though the mound is not as enormous as others. I am in trouble with the garden below. Every year I have to move some of the giants and very large ones out of the back row. I am being swallowed by Hoosier Dome and Piedmont Gold in 2016...See MoreHosta Favorite 2017
Comments (29)I'm just entering my 3rd spring as a Hosta grower, so while many of my favorites (or soon to be favorite) are listed here, mine aren't yet looking this nice. My 1st year favorites were easy since I only put 6 Hostas in the ground - June, Earth Angel, Abiqua Drinking Gourd, Rainforest Sunrise, Paul's Glory and Liberty. I don't think I was deliberately shopping off of the HOTY list, but not a bad place to start. Here's my favorite pic from my first spring before I learned about maple tree roots and I had to move these Hostas (and replaced them with others in spin out bags). My first full year here I added over 50 Hostas, but many of them were not very big yet so my favorites all came from Van Wade - The King, Emerald Ruff Cut and Lakeside Old Smokey. Boy, was I excited to find a Hosta destination not far from home. What a difference the 1st year makes. In August: And the following June: Another year, another 50+ Hostas and I'm excited to see what spring will bring. Here's my new bed from last year. This year I'm going to be in trouble. I've already ordered 60+ Hostas and my Hosta adventuring is going to range a bit further (while still enjoying those places closer to home). I think I need to move to some more acreage, and soon. Thanks for the therapy....See MoreDelawareDonna Zone 7A
