Does Anyone Bury Pots in the Ground?
Comments (3)Oops. I thought I was in the brugmansia forum, as a similar discussion takes place there. That's what happens when one has two windows going at once. Sorry about that. Okay, to answer your question about dahlias in a pot. I think that you could do this as well with dahlia. It may however stunt the growth somewhat, but probably not significantly ( unless you were planning to show ). The advantage of doing so would be that it would be easier to lift, and then separate the tubers later. Just be sure that you use as large a pot as possible ...2 gallons or more. I had one tuber that was over a foot long last year which was grown in soil in my front garden. I was surprised how big the tubers can actually get. I haven't tried this with dahlias but perhaps an experiment is in order. I love to experiment. Last year, I grew tomatoes hanging upside down from the bottom of the pot as an experiment, but this year won't do that again, as the produce was down significantly. I had heard that it would work so thought why not, (for the cost of a few seeds)....See MoreDoes anyone have a pot rack inside an upper cabinet?
Comments (20)Haha, you are right. I was going to hack the idea with a closet rod, but I like this wood one much better. A little googling and I am sure there are other places less than $80. I take it these innovative features--the pot rack and can drawer--work out much better than losing the items in a deep drawer or the depth of a pantry cabinet? Also, I made a study of the cans in our pantry last night. They are mostly a few standard sizes, right? Which is how you know all yours will fit in your drawers?...See MoreAre you making a pi-pie?
Comments (20)Well, my FAVORITE pie plate is one that David/Lakeguy gifted to me, it's an Emile Henry and it's the perfect depth and size. I really love it, though, because it was a gift from a good friend. I'd just dropped and broken my Grandmother's old FireKing Peach Lustre pie plate and I was so unhappy. And of course, it had a newly baked pie in it, to add insult to injury. I posted at CF and a couple of days later I got a package from David with a note that said it wouldn't replace Grandma's pie plate, but maybe it would make it a little easier to bear. He's such a nice guy, I miss him. L, I think your cast iron pan could make an awesome pie crust, definitely try it! Annie...See MoreIdea for individual pot pies?
Comments (31)Oh, that looks good Islay. The potatoes, Lancashire hot pot. (can't open the other one for some reason.) I went through this 10 or so years ago. Total fail. I started looking for individuals. Ended up with about a half dozen found at thrifts, SurLaT, A set of tarts I thought could be double duty...fruit pies and savory. Sure, perfect for individuals for special occasions but not something I could make and prep ahead and freeze. Just two of each. A pair. A perfect set of four for onion soup. I still use all of those all the time but no classic tins for pot pies. Small foil tins are obvious but just can't go there. It might depend on what he likes. Does he like yours? Or does he desire what he remembers. Like a double crust. And how to make what you like at the same time. Since your likes do not always coincide. Prepping for the freeze is always a classic eight most of the time. Two for that nights meal and six go into the freezer for easy three meals. (chopping and prepping anywho) piggy-back. In retrospect, should have just bought the darn 5-6 inch mini pot pie tins...I could freeze, then pop them out, freeze, make more, then re-heat in the tins. Instead, I braise 18-20 boneless skinless chicken thighs every 4-5 months. With lots of sofrito/miropoix, and make many meals from that frozen base protein. In 1/2 pint containers. Not an instant meal right out of the freezer. Minor prep. We like the same meals here. And like pretty much everything and on the same page. I would definitely accommodate differences if that came up. Make mine as I like, his version, freeze, pop those out, and oven re-heat to have a meal together. No way would I do day by day differences. Except it is possible to do a casserole with meat/proteins on one side and heavily veg on the other. (chicken juice/broth should be ok?/touching) if semi-vegetarian. After all my hunt and trials....still go back to my French 7inch. Top crust. It does it all. Beef, chicken, lamb. If DH wanted a memorable childhood bottom and top crust, I would do that. And make mine the way I like it. Veg, veg, veg, then top crust....See More- 8 years ago
