My 4 month old sold is not growing...

About four months ago I had a landscaper put down sod in my yard.

When we bought the house the yard was SCARY! Weeds growing knee high, compact rocks, etc.

The landscapers killed the weeds, laid new soil in some spots and laid the sod. Some parts of the yard are having good growth. I’ve noticed that in the shady areas. But some parts I have seen no growth what so ever. I find it kind of weird. It’s been 4 months and I’m concerned for my investment.

I’ve attached some photos. My yard is about 3,500 sqft. Please help!

This is not a landscape design issue. Repost in the Lawn Care forum. And be sure to report where you are and what type of sod you are growing!! If you don't, you will just be asked for that info :-)

Sod is, typically, made up of only one type of grass.

A lawn, OTOH, typically requires a combination of grass types to do well all over. Some grass types do better in the sun, some in the shade, etc.

If the lazy patch doesn't begin to grow, you may want to put some seed down on that spot which may grow better there.

This is typical for lawns. My front lawn was sodded with a variety of Kentucky Bluegrass. However, the sun's heat in the high summer killed the sod alongside my concrete drive. So, I had to reseed that area with a grass variety which could stand up to more heat.

Before you do anything, however, ... check to see what grass types are RECOMMENDED for a LAWN in your area. The last thing you want to do is to plant grass seed ... which does not go well with what is already sodded.

I've had this issue, as well. Sodded grass was short (slow-growing) and dark green ... while the grass I seeded was tall (fast-growing) and lighter green. I, ultimately, had to KILL all of the non-matching grass in that area ... and restart from scratch. Very discouraging ...

Those do grow fast! And I wouldn't worry about the cats having bothered them. These plants are very resilient. I'm constantly battling volunteer seedlings in my yard. The birds drop their seeds everywhere, and all all times of the year I'll find new seedling popping up out of every possible nook and cranny, among my flower beds, in my vegetable garden, and right up against the foundation of our house. I usually let them get to a certain size and then harvest the "palm hearts" for eating :) They taste just like asparagus and are so crunchy! Good luck!

Its a little trickier to pot up a Clay pot than plastic (usually you can gently lift the whole root ball from plastic pots) much smoother/easier than you can with a Clay pot. Take a sharp knife and run it through the outer edges and tip the plant on its side and gently very carefully slide it out of the pot using something to guide it out gently. If you yank it out too fast/hard you run the risk of ripping the trunk and roots. If you can do this carefully you will be able to tell if the plant is ready to be transplanted...but visually it does not look like its ready to be up potted quite yet...maybe a few more months? You'll be able to tell for sure once you check the roots. Signs of a very well rooted plant is watering daily or water running through and the plant is dry... Your CA lower humidity means you will have less problems with diseases such as anthracnose or fungus...but the down side is our trees grow faster in FL because of our summer rains and high humidity...but during flower and fruit set it needs the "dry" low humidity to set fruits successfully so you guys have a much better climate for that.

You have my sympathy. It's scary when the little ones get those high fevers. I'd offer Pedialyte, popsicles, Gatorade, Kool-aid, juice, Sprite, ginger ale, or anything to keep her hydrated. If you're worried that she's been sick for too long, call your doctor again and talk to one of the nurses. They can advise you as to whether they think your dd should be brought back in. Insist on an appointment if you feel she needs another one. The ER docs are ok in an emergency, but the pediatrician is much better. Did they tell you to give her any Tylenol or Motrin? Those will lower the fever and reduce the achiness. I hesitate to tell you to give her those because recently I've heard doctors want the fever to run its course since it's mother nature's way of getting rid of an infection. Check with the nurse or doctor on that. The 'in' thing to do seems to change every few years. You might try a humidifier to ease some of her congestion from the cold. You didn't ask this part, but I will warn you about letting your child play on any toys in the doctor's office. Don't. Those toys have the germs of almost every sick child who has come through there. I learned the hard way with my first child when we went in for an ear infection and developed RSV a few days later. I hope your little girl starts feeling better.

Marica, The first photo is one of an 'obesum' of a very kind woman that allowed here photo of this beautiful tree to be used on this forum. It would be one that she has had for many years. The multitude of roots on the bottome 2/3 rds of tree would be roots, now called it's 'caudex' as they are exposed. This same process is true with the second photo. This being a Arabicum/TS with what could be natural root form, but very possible with what they call 'Decorated Roots". To achieve this, when you they would cut off the entire lower portion of the tree, treat it, repot to have roots form all the way around the lower edges of the caudex. Then once the roots are large enough, they then remove roots selectively in a manner to create a balance between roots and branching. This I have not tried and could not venture to explain to anyone.

Another thought ... contact the company that did the sodding ... and see what they recommend.

They have to have had experience with this ...
