80s contemporary exterior ideas?
Comments (4)If the junipers lining the walk are in reasonably good condition, I'd allow them to stay, trimming them back to the walk edge. They are not too much taller than the walk and act as cheeckwall, hiding the edge of the steps. The two plants up by the stoop, severely pinch the entrance and occupy too my too space. (BTW, any plants hold soil relative to their root system size. You don't need two in the wrong place to do it.) So they should be removed. Other, low and possibly flowering plants near the stoop could be incorporated into the landscape It looks like the steps are retained in wood. Someday this will go and you'll be rebuilding the steps at which time you could re-evaluate the steps and planting scheme as a whole. I'd suggest steps that are entirely masonry, no wood. I much dislike the roof color. Something is grey architectural shingles would look a lot better....See MoreIdeas for mindfully updating this 70s/80s contemporary home?
Comments (11)We just went with a highly reviewed local "general home maintenance" (how their website describes them) company. They're licensed, insured, & bonded and offer a one year warranty for work. They were wonderful to work with, honestly, and the price was very reasonable in my opinion. No, our siding is cedar bevel / clapboard. Before/after pics attached. They removed the rotten pieces and replaced them without damaging any of the the original siding that was still in good shape. They checked for any damage to the original underlayment when removing the siding or mold. Much to my surprise, they said everything there still looked great so didn't think any more work was needed than just the few damaged/rotten boards. You can't visually tell where the work was done, it blends in seamlessly. We also had them replace some rotten trim around the clerestory windows. They painted the new trim and siding boards with a paint we color-matched within a few days. However, I believe cedar siding doesn't actually need to be painted or treated (pros can correct me if I'm wrong) so I wouldn't think it's an issue if you don't paint right away....See More80's contemporary needs budget-friendly exterior update
Comments (20)Yes, the plants are a constant work in progress with the shade and the sloped yard and deer that devour everything. Once we got the pachysandra growing densely that helped. Deer don't touch the boxwoods. We have rhododendrons, but they are high since the deer trimmed off all the lower growth. We had some rot, but the painters brought a carpenter who replaced all the bad boards. We've also had to do control for wasps and ants. Keep ahead of the bugs. Figured out we had insects when the woodpecker started on the siding! When budget allows a more contemporary front door would be nice, plus change the light fixtures, and stucco the chimney....See Moreideas for 80's contemporary exterior
Comments (12)No dyed mulch, please. The best mulch for plants and soil is natural cypress, and there should be plenty of that in FL. You need a larger light fixture; about 1/3 of the door's height. Since roof colors are much more limited that paint, I would wait until the re-roofing is done before making the decisions on color. Meanwhile, just paint the door you have with a nice pop that works with the brown, and save up for a new MCM door and garage door when you re-roof. That's when final trim and door colors can be decided....See MoreKate
