Casement window crank is in the way of wooden blind slats

We need a window treatment for a casement window with a crank at the bottom of the frame. We want the window treatment to let in a great view but also provide night time privacy. We currently have 2 1/2 inch slat wooden blinds. We like the look but the crank at the bottom of the frame causes the blinds to hang crookedly when the slats are closed or requires the blinds to hang below the window sill and then swing forward from the sill.

We just bought a house with casement windows and cranks. So far we have no window treatments (and no privacy) as I really don't like outside mounts for shades. These are 30 yr old Andersen windows and their in great shape. I found 2 solutions. One, very affordable - I ordered a couple Anderson T-handles from Amazon (very affordable) to try them out - they had all the colors and VERY easy to do myself. it definitely makes the situation better. That's probably what I'll do. However, I also called Anderson windows and you can replace the whole mechanism with a newer folding crank that would totally fix the issue. But it's a more expensive fix to do all the windows and I'd hire someone to do it for me as it's more complicated. But if you only do a couple windows it's definitely affordable.

Remount the blinds so they hang straight down. YOu can add a strip of wood up top to the trim, whatever size you need.

Blinds should be outside bracket[ mounted outside the window frame] to late for that, try the above solution.

mfr = PGT, no model# visible... these are the highest impact level Miami-Dade approved 'WinGuard' units. Upon further examination, it appears that the crank housing is a TWO-piece affair, but can't be disassembled in place, due to sill clearance. AND there's no apparent MOUNTING screws on the INdoor side either... lawdy. Cranked it all the way open, removed screen, craned my neck out the opening, gave it a good long look and... WAY too involved to get into before the weekend, lol. IOW, the complete opposite of "user-friendly"! To be fair, they work great, and shut out ALL wind noise from the recent Hurricane Sandy... like submarine hatches, LOL. I've GOT to be missing an easier solution... will call an installer I know, as the PGT website is useless.

Thanks everyone for the comments. Yes, completely blocking light and letting air through are mutually exclusive. The problem is that with our current set up, the blinds have to be completely open in order to have the windows open more than a tiny bit -- otherwise the blinds sway back and forth against the window frame. This is the problem with having blinds raise and lower in front of casement windows that open sideways. You can't just have the window open a bit and then blinds open a bit to compensate. We're looking for a better compromise that still has good light blocking power for the part of the blind / curtain that is closed. It seems like standard hanging curtains are the way to go here. Thanks for the advice!

Yes, having the screen inside made me pause, however, I did end up with the crank out. The screen rolls up and during the summer months, I pull it down. In the winter, I just leave it up. Love the clean look and being able to open even while raining. The crank out took up more glass space which I did not want to give up. This is a Marvin Ultimate Awning Window which replaced an old double hung over the sink.

I took the handles off and put them in a drawer when I need to open I put one on open it and put it back in the drawer.

I think that is why they are removable. Seems like I had the same dilemma when we lived in the midwest.
