To Stop Squirrels from digging in your pots
Comments (8)As long the Critter Ritter granules in the tea balls are kept fairly fresh, the squirrels and chipmunks seem to leave them alone. Bigger plants sometimes require 2-3 balls per cage. It also helps to sprinkle some on the ground around the plant. This year I plan to grow more tomatoes, so I'm thinking I will have to figure out some other granule containment device. The tea balls are just too expensive in quantity. My plan at the moment is to make little sachets with landscape fabric or screen door cloth. I've also noticed that keeping a corn cob feeder for the squirrels as far away as possible from the veggie patch reduces the number of nibbles. Another possibility would be to buy one of those owl decoys. Friends of ours, who live on a lake, have several owl decoys in their boat house to keep the canada geese from crapping up the docks. I remember them saying they have to move the "owls" around frequently, and that the ones with the bobble-heads and reflective eyes are better than the statue-type decoys....See MoreStop Squirrels digging up seeds
Comments (2)I read somewhere that they don't like peppermint, so I bought some peppermint tea and sprinkled the contents of the teabags all around my crops. That got expensive, so I bought bulk dried peppermint leaves. I don't know if it was that or the squirrels finally got tired of my dogs, but for the most part they left the garden alone. My neighbor grows corn and to keep birds and squirrels away, he ties plastic grocery bags to sticks all around his garden. The movement and rustling seems to keep most critters away....See MoreMight lava rock deter squirrels from digging in pots???
Comments (10)Mikeandbarb, We stapled hardware cloth strips, about 2" wide, on top of a fence with the cut ends pointing up. That deterred the neighborhood feral cats and the squirrels from running along the top of the fence. Our neighbor made a "nail board" out of a strip of 1/2" plywood about 2" wide, with 1" or 1 1/2" nails in it about every four inches. The great thing is, once you put this up and the pests learn the fence is unfriendly, they stay off for quite a while. Of course, we still had pecans coming up in every potted plant we had outside. Sure wish we'd known about lava rock!...See MoreHow do I keep squirrels from digging up my new lawn?
Comments (4)Lucky me, I guess, because I have Kentucky bluegrass. There are endless squirrels around here. I have heard of a fundraiser for a country fire department that holds a competition for shooting squirrels. Maybe I can get them to hunt in my yard this year....See MoreHeruga (7a Northern NJ)
