A very sad, sad story
Comments (16)One death is hurtful to the survivors and it adds to the complications when there are mixed feelings including troubles, for it leads to complications in the emotional reactions of the surviving person where there was distance ... but that does not appear to have been the situation with the father. How fortunate that they had decided to resolve some of the issues related to your friend's family and were in the process when this double tragic event took place. I hope that some of the issues had been dealt with satisfactorily before the situation was put on permanent hold. I hope that your friend is able to deal with the death and mourning in a fairly normal way, without extra complications arising from earlier antipathy. There's a message here for us all, I think - when there's been trouble in a family or among friends, it's best to make a substantial effort to get the situation resolved earlier, rather than later ... for later the door of opportunity may be closed for the rest of this life. May God's grace be with your friend and family as they work their way through this difficult period. ole joyful...See MoreSad sad looking camellia
Comments (4)Luis has given you excellent advice re caring for the plant. The plant looks healthy to me- it just needs a bit of shape-pruning to improve its appearance. In terms of getting it to look less "scraggly", you'll want to cut the plant back to promote bushiness. As a general rule, a camellia that has gotten tall and lanky ought to cut back pretty far to promote branching, but since this is a public plant that is expected to stay looking nice, you might need to do this in steps, rather than all at once? Since the camellia has been getting good care for a few months, and has flowered, I think it would be fine to go ahead and cut it back a little. Once you see how the camellia puts out new leaves in reponse to that initial pruning, that will give you an idea about how to proceed for a fuller, leafier shrub. Something to keep in mind is that camellias set their flower buds for the next season soon after they finish flowering. This means that if you prune after that window of opportunity closes you may be sacrificing the next season's blooms. It won't hurt the plant to do so; you just may not get as many flowers as you might have had otherwise. There's a lot of good info online about how and when to prune; here's a link for starters: http://www.abc.net.au/gardening/stories/s1724266.htm It helps to know what look you're aiming for, and then shape according to that goal and how your individual shrub responds to pruning. Camellias all respond well to pruning, but they are slow-growing so it may take a few years before you start seeing the shape you like. Comments (15)This is the time to work on your soil. Add compost, manure and good mulch. Keep the roots in good shape. Roses always do better with rain than hose water. You should see what the drought is doing to my roses in CA. The year it rained and rained was my best year ever. But roses want sun and warmth too. If you have been using chemical fertilizers instead of natural ones then you might want to give your soil some TLC while the roses take a break....See MoreSad, sad flat front of house, need new entry design
Comments (10)we are going to tear down that ugly retaining wall and dig out so entire front of house will be exposed... want to add stone entry steps with porch or ? portico. Want to have large mossy and beautiful boulders to look natural and act as retaining wall. How do we get to front door with new plan? I wish we had never bought this place. It's so discouraging. The inside is ok and remodeled but the outside. it does sit on 40 acres but it's just such a hideous exterior....See Moredowlinggram
