More TKO!
Comments (26)I have a story to narrate here. In my last job, in a meeting I happened to do a small talk with a director who mentioned that he was contemplating kitchen remodel and wondering whether to add an island there....and being a TKO plus TIO (Totally Island Obsessed), I not only told him that he should, but looked at his floorplan and told him that it could be improved by moving the fridge and that his corner sink would have problems with cabinet opening against dishwasher. About a year later, I found myself working closely with this person's team due to a reorg within my company. Oops -- I do not think that he liked me taking so much initiative for his kitchen remodel.... I think he was sort of cold. I still wonder whether I should have kept my big mouth shut..but anyway. TKO can be good for soul but bad for career :-)...See MoreAnyone want to take a crack at a layout for a potential kitchen?
Comments (7)My suggestions would require dealing with your heat - maybe changing for toekick heaters or something but what I would do ideally is take down the wall between the breakfast room and the mudroom but leave the wall that the sink is on currently - remove that door and maybe lengthen it a bit if (would have to play with layout to see how much) - move the door to the outside where the window is into the mudroom swinging open the opposite direction against the wall with cabinetry on the wall facing the door as you walk in (back side of current sink), but uncramping that nice but tiny breakfast nook. Then I would do an L of cabinetry down the wall with the funky windows and probably leave those corner windows and use the opportunity for a corner sink. those high windows don't bother me really and if they are not being used for a view I'd probably do nice stained glass in there and not spend the money on that particular structural change. I'd extend the L the other way too toward the foyer. Remove the cabinets on the wall to the mud room or do 12" deep pantry storage. Then a nice big island that won't be cramped by that corner between the mudroom and the breakfast nook. Of course if that wall is the original exterior of the house (i is drawn looking very thin but that might not be accurate) and that corner is important for bearing, things would be a bit more cramped but could probably still work....See MorePotential kitchen remodel
Comments (3)What’s your budget? 50K? 100K? 200K? Does that include all new flooring for the open concept areas that will need to change? http://www.remodeling.hw.net/cost-vs-value/2018/...See MoreRemodeling Potential of Smaller Home
Comments (48)Eliza, I not only understand making an emotional purchase I did it. I also have made two very expensive changes, one is more of a super-adequacy, a gunite pool in Ct. and as mentioned above I added a master bathroom. i am looking into a kitchen redo that will provide more function but my existing kitchen is already nice so this will eat most of my equity. I am still most likely going to spend that money because I, or more accurately my kids, are very attached to this house and its neighborhood. However, our 401k, CHETs and IRAs are strong, my mortgage is paid off and my husband has been in remission for two years. Without these safety nets I would not be spending on any more cosmetic changes. For even when you plan to stay put in a house life often throws you a curve ball. Make sure if you need to sell for some unforeseen reason you are not driving yourself into unrecoverable debt. As long as your eyes are open and not blinded by unrealistic budgets in HGTV style renos and misleading ROI an emotional purchase is ok if other safety nets are existing. Good luck....See MoreTorida
