Astilbe help requested - Warning lots of info to read...
Comments (5)The individual blooms of astilbe do not last very long. It is not at all unusual for them to go over or start to fade and dry (turning a rusty brown) in a month or so. In fact, very few perennials have a bloom season that lasts more than a few weeks to a month. Some folks like the dried look of the spent flowers stalks and leave them in place, others remove them. One way to extend the season of interest is to plant different varieties that have different bloom times - some cultivars are very early, others offer flowers quite a bit later. As to why the peach and purple didn't produce the colors you were expecting is hard to say......depends on what cultivars they are. IME, 'Peach Blossom' produces flowers that are a rather insipid and very pale color and they do not hold long. FWIW, flower color has typically little to do with growing conditions, other than too much strong light can bleach out certain colors. Otherwise, it sounds like you are providing pretty much the condiitons they want - a rich, organic soil and sufficient moisture and partial shade....See MoreAnyone get a land loan recently? (found THE perfect lot!)
Comments (26)Most people with hobby farms around here let a local cut and bale the hay and just keep it. Or, they hire them to do it if they've got horses that can use it. It takes quite a bit of money to buy all of the equipment to deal with 14 acres, even if you're not baling hay. I have a friend who got a pretty good bargain for a 35 horse tractor, bush hog, finish mower, grader blade, box blade, etc. It still came to 40K. Adding on the hay equipment on top of that is another 10K easy. That is an expense that most city people fail to take into account when buying acreage. It's work and it doesn't take care of itself. A good portion of your time will be spent keeping opportunistic saplings cut down, and the fence in good condition, and mowing....See MoreI found a great community to talk about Menopause!

Comments (9)Interesting site. I could look there forever. I did find my kitchen on there--thanks for the heads up ccoombs1. At least they said that it was pulled from Houzz. What is a little of a concern is under the announcement that they have the Bianco Antico back in stock is a photo of Redroze's kitchen, without any credit where they pulled the photo from. I'll have to drop her a line and let her know. Personally, I don't care if someone uses my photos, unless someone is trying to take credit or imply that they are responsible for the kitchen. Thanks for the website, it is fun to look at. -Bee...See Moreartemis_ma
