Flooring Design Dilemma dining room

Wood floor between living room and dining room

I have existing hardwood floor currently in Living room. Would like to update the dining room floor which has old wall to wall carpet and continue the hardwood floors. I have 2 issues. The dining room floor is not exactly level but we can probably fix that somewhat. Right now there is a wood saddle at the end of the dining room that butts up to the Living room. I would like to remove that and then continue the new wood flooring into dining room. One contractor said I have to leave that saddle between the 2 rooms but prefer not too.

DR is not completely open but has wall on right and left side about 3 feet wide as you enter the separates from LR.

Any suggestions as to how to deal with that wood saddle if I truly can not run the hardwood floor straight through one room into another?

Photos would help. I'm not sure what a wood "saddle" is. Are you referring to a transition strip or reducer between the two different surfaces? From the carpet to the hardwood?

I have been a lurker here for a very long time and have enjoyed reading about all of the decorating questions and the many different viewpoints. This is my first post asking for help... I am going to get laminate flooring for my living room and hallway. The only thing holding me up is what to do about the transition between the dining room and living room - the floor curves. What would you suggest here? How would it look to extend the laminate into the dining room as far as the cabinet in the picture. That would eliminate the curve. I don't mind the curve if there was some kind of curved transition strip but I don't know of any. There is a rubber strip there now, but I don't think it would look good with the wood laminate. IMO wait until you are in the space before buying anything Take some pics of the space and the sofa post a to scale floor plan and then you will get some real help.As for TV check out Besta from IKea make sure the unit is low enough so the middle of the TV screen is at eyelevel when you are seated if you have the space you can but this system and its pieces together to get a real custom look. BTW I love the Eames chir and ottoman with that style and color of sofa

Not understanding the "half wall" comment -- hard to give advice without knowing what the rest of the layout looks like. Right now the wall and doorways control the flow of traffic in a certain way. If/when you remove the wall, what will traffic patterns be like? Let's assume you can successfully relocate the heating and solve the flooring issue...appears that you have pretty large rooms, and will have the opportunity to arrange and rearrange until you find a furniture layout that works for the space. You might consider finding an on-line app or use a furniture store's app that allows you to put in a room's dimension and then put in furniture and move it around -- it's kind of fun.

a floor to ceiling cabinet to divide the space. Decorate the living room separate of dining area. I would lower the light over the dining table 30" above center of table. and a Large Mirror on the wll to reflect the light. ... is there a sofa opposite the TV? Center the TV on the rug and create seating area. Center the Table/chairs on the Light fixture and dcreate space around it.

Normally that transition gets removed and then a new floor is installed. If you *need a transition between the two floors or not will depend on the subfloor under the carpet and whether or not you can purchase the same hardwood as what is currently in the living room.

Can you post photos? It is hard to say whether or not you will be able to continue a hardwood into another space just by some words on a page. Photos say it best.
