Plain 70s Ranch - needs help!
I'd love your ideas on paint color and landscaping for the exterior of the house we just bought. We'd like to keep the brick unpainted, and have thrown around the idea of a wall or some kind of barrier to break up the plain front; but the front yard isn't huge. I'm open to all ideas because we're just spinning our wheels at this point and it's really a blank canvas.. Thank you!

6 years agowell, right now you have the tan, the brick, baby blue and the white garage doors and fascia. it's a mis-mash. the shutters are an improper size (too narrow)
If you must have the shutters, do something like these. here is your brick w/white stucco and black shutters
this coloring is nice. I would think about doing horizontal redwood slats on your inset porch area, around your window and the walls on either side. kind of like this,,
just on the recessed walls. this also looks great with black and white.
remove the house numbers from where they're at now and place them vertically to the right of the garage door. get bigger ones in black.some color options. you can also go to Sherwin Williams color snap visualizer and upload a picture. try out different colors

Comments (18)Adding the planned front porch and moving the entrance to the right some will make a huge difference. Selecting a more inviting paint color/trim color will do wonders for the home. I would do everything possible to dress up the garage door. It is really the only focal point on the front of your home. Yardvaark(9A) had a great visual about extending you pavers over to the entryway. Comments (9)If the floor of the porch is concrete faced on the sides with brick, then, unless it is damaged and crumbling and either looks bad or is in some way dangerous, keep it. Add a forward facing gable roof over the front porch you have, with the ridge of the roof either the same height or just below the ridge of the original house. What you use for your front porch posts will decide" the look" -- the curb appeal. My personal preference would be to use square wood posts -- 6"x6" or even 8"x8"-- and vertical siding on the gable over the porch painted the same color you paint the left addition that has siding rather than brick. Comments (7)Katie, if you really don't care for the brick, then the Romabio would be a great option for you. Did you know that the lime wash (the Classico) is removable in the first 72 hours? You could try it out on one side just to see if you like it. If not, hose it off! The Masonry Flat is permanent. acts more like a paint but it's the mineral base so it allows the brick to breathe. Before and after w/the Romabio. looks great Even if you plan on 'covering' most of the brick, (which really isn't that great of an idea) the warm tones are still going to show. I just think doing any type of blue siding on top of it won't look right. If you 'paint' the brick the same white as the windows, and then do the blue siding, you'll have a completely different looking home! I'd sample the romabio on the back or side and try out some sample paints above it, just to see if you like it. If your plan is to remove the brick anyway, I don't see what you have to lose. You could paint your brick the anonymous color, Urbane bronze on the siding, you could do a nice blue door Or, do the Riverway on the siding, paint the brick a soft white, and urbane bronze on the trim. Comments (21)the gutters would look so much better in a copper color, especially w/that Jade color. anyway you can get them painted (or don't know if you're getting new ones) you could do the bronze/copper, or a brighter copper, address numbers and copper window boxes (You can order copper sheeting and make these yourself. or just paint a copper color. but the real stuff patinas w/time. I have a roll of super thin real copper. it's not difficult to work with) for the front door, I'd do the jade color, or even a lighter jade. If you don't want green on the trim, How about one of these Bronze colors? for the garage door I think any of the 3 would look nice some other color palettes...See More

6 years agoI like the darker Sandy Hook Grey that Beth recommended for the whole house and the garage.
The red roses in her post would look good at the base of the walkway along the side walk to the mail box. How about a trellis over the garage?
Square trellis in a vibrant color on either side of the window in a vibrant color would be appealing.
