You can also do it the really old fashioned way -- the same method that has long been used to make sorbet. Just pour the mixture into a baking dish, and set that into your freezer. Also, you will need a heavy glass or metal bowl, an electric hand mixer, and a bowl of ice big enough for the first bowl to sit in. Put the heavy glass or metal bowl and the beater attachments for the hand mixer into the freezer at the same time as the ice cream mix to chill them. When its almost but not quite fully frozen, use a fork to break it up into small lumps about the size of a nickle or a little less. Then put it back into the freezer about 10 minutes to set up a bit again. Now, working as quickly as possible, take the pre-chilled heavy bowl out of the freezer,and set it in a bath of ice cubes in the 2nd larger bowl. Quickly transfer the ice cream mixture into the chilled bowl, and beat it as much as possible with the electric mixer ONLY until the lumps are broken up, and it begins to whip up a bit. Then, back into the freezer for another 15 to 30 minutes, until its not at all "melty" but still a little soft. Repeat the beating/whipping process several times -- the idea is to whip as much air into it to make it creamy and fluffy as possible, without melting it too much at each whipping. The chilled bowl, the ice bath, and the chilled beaters help, but beware that the very act of beating it creates friction between the bowl and beaters, which makes heat, so this process is a balancing act between beating in air and melting the ice cream. Done right, which isn't at all hard to do with just a little practice, this method does work, albeit it will never be quite as fluffy as commercial ice creams you are used to, which not only incorporate a large volume of air into the mix using specialized equipment, but which also generally use gums and stabilizers which prevents the product from melting and turning liquid as fast as a pure, cream and milk only product will. We have a 1916 house and have inset cabinets (some recycled from the 1920s or 1930s and some we had custom made to match twenty years ago). And, of course we have radiators so we don't have central air. In the summer we do put in window air conditioners but perhaps run the air conditioners a total of two weeks out of the summer. The rest of the time the windows are open. We have never had any problem with our cabinets. I also had some matching ones made for a bathroom, and that hasn't been a problem either. I think the secret is to get a really good carpenter who know what he is doing because these are more difficult to make than the full overlay. By the way if you do get the inset and want then to really be period appropriate, make sure to get the visible hinges. Perhaps you live in an area of the country where the humidity is really a huge problem for much of the year, so maybe advice is different for your area.

I have seen several French Door fridges with no icemaker in the door. I made the mistake of buying a LG French Door with the icemaker. Long story short, I had the thing worked on at least 5 times by the time it was 5 years old. I've had a recall because of interior lights staying on and catching peoples houses on fire, a computer board went out. The icemaker went out and I had it replaced to the tune of $600 for the parts and repairman. But it never worked at all even after he replaced it. Repair man said it needed another couple of hundred worth of work. I just quit spending money on it at that point. I'm building again and this house will have a Side by Side GE with the door ice and water dispenser. The icemaker is the 10 LBS arctic one. The LG will be in the garage for a beer cooler. Pretty sad for a fridge that is only 6.5 years old.

It would be convenient to have a 1-way communication from some appliances - just an IM. And an appliance that can only SEND, not recieve. A washer indicating unbalanced load and DONE A dryer indicating DONE A furnace indicating "house too cold, please come check it out) Refrigerator and freezers indicating temperature problems. But you don't need them setting up autonomous networks and ordering their own spare parts!
