Honest Opinions on Ikea Cabinets?
Comments (61)I got my estimate from Scherrs, now I'll sit down and figure the costs for Ikea. The Scherr's invoice has a price listed for the drawer fronts and doors, so I hope I can get a pretty accurate idea of what the total would be in that case. Sadly, using the tandombox from scherrs adds a LOT to the price. They suggest dovetail drawers with blum tandem glides. I know this is very backwards, but I just hate wood drawers! Hate 'em, hate 'em. Hate the wasted space, [realitve] lack of internal fittings, but really it's just an emotional response based on months of anticipating the tandembox. In this era, wood drawers seem about as wise as straw roofs. But not sure I want to pay an extra 30% for metal boxes, either-- 30% of the total, mind you, not 30% of the drawer cost. I also hate the email I got from Ikea: I asked them to fix the website so that 4 drawer stacks can be ordered [or at least priced] with different fronts-- someone simply forgot to put the 'fronts' menu on that item page. The email was your typical mealy mouthed, one size fits all 'Thanks for writing to us! We must assume you are stupid, and don't have 'cookies' enabled on your computer. Once you figure that out, everything will be fine.' [Not verbatim, but very much the gist of the thing.] Irritating, but not *quite* enough to keep me from ordering from them if the numbers end up working out. For those of you that have Ikea cabs, what kind of lead time did they need? I don't need them yesterday, but one of the 'cons' of Scherrs is the 3 month wait....See MoreHenrybuilt cabinet damaged by BlueStar range
Comments (43)I just wanted to add my similar experience with my Bluestar. After about 5 months of ownership and several uses of the oven, I noticed the discolored door yesterday when my wife was baking cookies. I opened my pullout next to the stove to find the side of the door scorched. This appears to be slightly different from OP's issue. The scorching is next to the louvered toe kick. There's no door seal to blame here. There's a 3/8" air gap between the edge and the toe kick. One of the concerns I saw about the Bluestar when researching was that the door, knobs, and handle get very hot. I do not find that to be the case for me. I find these to be acceptably warm. It was the toe kick that I noticed was insanely hot. I was concerned that maybe an internal heat shield or insulation was missing. After posting to the kitchen forum, I was lead to this thread. I guess it sounds like this is a standard "feature" for the Bluestar. Yes, the stove is not a rocketship. That simplicity was a benefit for us. With that simplicity also comes a lack of engineering. That's not a total knock against Bluestar. It just seems like Bluestar employs more craftsmen/artists who put out a really nice looking product with some killer features than engineers/scientists who run tests and further improve the design. Pulling out the heavy stove to protrude from all cabinetry is a fix, but it's just a bandage. We followed all of the installation instructions to the tee. The stove exterior surfaces should not get that hot. We love the open burners and will have to learn to deal with the quirks of the range at this point....See MoreAdvice on how to best utilize the IKEA SE-BP1D Sektion cabinet
Comments (12)I built an indoor laundry room using the older Akurum modules but the new Sektion can be used and match up. The beauty of IKEA is that in my case, I furnished the laundry room in phases to meet my budget limitations. Took me almost two years to be completed but it turned out amazing!!!! I used a 15" pull out door section just like that and inside in the bottom I stored cans of soda and water bottles, in the middle more water and misc stuff, added two more drawers to store dog collars and grooming tools and top skinny drawer for a handful of often used screwdrivers, small hammer and the like. It was awesome!!! I purchased all the cabinets and end panels at one time plus the lighting so my electrician could provide power and light switch. Later I returned and purchased interior drawers and organizers. Later I returned to Ikea and got doors and drawer fronts, hinges and dampers. The last thing was getting the pulls. People were amazed with the quality of IKEA cabinets and the amazing amount of storage I added to a 1970's Florida ranch. Creating an indoor laundry room (annexed space from the oversized side load garage) turned out to be a major selling star feature of the house. The house sold within three days and there were back-up bids from anxious buyers. My realtor was shocked! I told him...... Never discount an Interior Designer's ability to make the most efficient use of space! :-) *** Sink, faucet, cabinet lights and all hardware are from IKEA. Tile, glass backsplash tile, and ceiling light are from Home Depot. LG brand front load laundry appliances which were AWESOME. ***Sorry about the crappy pics at the bottom; these were taken using a very old phone and are fuzzy but hope it can show you how I added parts and storage to the IKEA cabinet cases. Comments (6)We put an Akurum IKEA kitchen in about 15 years ago. An inexpensive white flat panel door. It was a rental and there was some water damage under the sink. Also the white filler strips had yellowed. Aside from that it's still standing with new doors. One door somehow went missing so we replaced all the doors with another style. What's great about IKEA is you can have a whole new kitchen in an afternoon. The doors pop on and off with no tools. Just change the kick plates, and a few filler strips, and you have a brand new kitchen!...See MoreUser
