I would have soooooo totally done the apartment differently. The owner's lifestyle needed to accommodate dining for eight and maybe up to twelve. I would have done sleek, upholstered banquette seating with very high backs along that wall with a rectangular table. I would just have two chairs with it instead of four out at all time and then bring out folding chairs for parties. . These are just so kewl for storing when not in use, and also fabuous when in use. Just think............no bulking up a closet or running to the basement! Just hang them as wall art or slide 80-100 of them under your bed: . . The decor is rather uninspired and I did not learn any nifty small space living tricks from the article. The article said the owner changes out the black cords on all of her black appliances to white so they match the white walls. :Hmmmm: That sounds like a lot of money spent on something very picky, yet she kept the cringe-worthy, shutter style, bi-fold doors on the closet. I would have done track panel style to have them blend seamlessly, or barn door style as a focal. I would have Velcro-ed a bedskirt on the Murphy bed to make it feel less like a prison bunk. Agree that you should consider a murphy bed. Otherwise... In that small a space, don't buy a headboard and foot board. Instead, buy only a good quality metal bed frame (with rollers) that can transition and, with wood cross slats, hold either a twin or full mattress and box springs. Also note, when space is at a premium: Don't buy stuff you don't need. Invest only in the basics only and choose smaller items when practical. Sit in any seats you're considering buying -- choose comfort over style. You want to go vertical to maximize storage/use -- choose tall cabinets or chests with drawers -- not necessarily one intended to be bedroom furnishings -- rather than a low dresser w/mirror. You can always put a full length mirror on the back of a closet door instead. A table with drop leaf sides or to which you could add leaves in the center when you have guests would be much more practical than a large solid table (with a lot of hard chairs) that takes up a lot of room. A pair of comfortable club chairs (wheels a plus) that could serve as both dining and/or living room chairs when you have guests are worth considering. A sofa isn't necessary; however, a love seat would be preferable to a full length sofa. Choose furnishings that have storage. A cabinet with doors could double as a tv cabinet with storage below. End tables and/or bed side tables could be a two drawer filing cabinet. You can add caster to add height or choose one with a third shallow top drawer. An upscale executive desk chair might also serve as a recliner. A recliner for your tv viewing wouldn't need an ottoman. Any ottoman should be a storage ottoman with a lid that flips to become a coffee table when needed. If you're on a tight budget, consider making a few visits to Habitat for Humanity Restore Store for bargains. GoodWill and charity thrift stores are more likely to have bargains than "antique"/vintage -- used -- furniture stores. Inventory changes with each donation/purchase, so make more than one trip. Cute apartment. A few ideas: Floor plant on one side of fireplace to bring some color on that side Sofa is small so don’t do too many pillows. 1-2 and a cozy throw for the NYC cold winters! Small round storage ottoman (on wheels or sliders) nestled by fireplace can be storage and pulled out for storage too (maybe something with texture ) Where do you eat? The types of coffee tables with a top that hinges up/out to become a table is a good idea. Someone posted upthread but West Elm and other box stores sell them. Rug- great way to bring in color (even if it’s subtle). Just make sure you get a size big enough but one that gues by impede movement of your office chair. It looks like you work at home a lot. Gallery wall above sofa would be nice. Current art is too small and high. Kitchen- looks clean! Add color with wood cutting board, colored teal kettle or bowl of oranges/apples, salt/pepper shaker. You also consider a series of art/prints in the wall above the cabinets. Can’t wait to see what you do!

Yes! If there is such a thing as a comfortable sleeper sofa, I really do want to know about it. My adult son could use one, but I can’t recommend. Another option for a day bed would be a trundle. I’ve had one and can highly recommend as your "sofa.” You can choose to have a trundle if you want the option for a guest. Or, at least in the past, you could choose drawer or shelves with baskets in place of the trundle. We started ours as a bed for our young son. Eventually, it was moved to a guest room that functioned like a den with desk and tv...so probably functioned like a studio. We had enough room to turn the lower trundle so it was perpendicular to the bed, and about half under, forming an “L.” Totally comfortable as seating and as beds. Had to let it go when I was downsizing...but would now like to have it back!!! I’ll be following to see what you do with this space. Fun!
