Three of any one style in a room is usually enough, so you have 4 chairs, you can switch to something else at the island. If you have a coffee table you don't need side tables for the sofa. Look at ceramic garden stools for side tables with chairs to pick up the Chinese vibe, but change materials and add color.

I think of Chinoiserie chairs as being rather formal - not something for the kitchen, but I guess if it's just one big room with the LR, it would work. It's a style I adore! I also love antique bamboo pieces!

I have to laugh, since I have had my pieces through it going in and out of style twice previously. It's hard to say exactly a rule for "too much" but I think you can go to far with any style to the point it becomes oppressive rather than interesting.

I think "good" and "bad" blue and white porcelain can often be mixed quite nicely - unless one is a total "purest". I am not.

I guess we need to go rub down our blue and white pieces with dirt :). But seriously I have a very old piece , not sure the exact age but has been in family forever that if I had to categorize it by this I would put in the NO and I have a very large vase I bought within the last ten years that I would put in the YES.

But back to my original question I guess Im trying to figure out how much bamboo is too much. I love it. I find that everything I see that I like is bamboo inspired. Yet im fairly certain I can't have an entire home filled with bamboo! SO where does one draw the line?

design, do you have a picture of the room you're thinking about, or, if this is a new space, do you have a list of the various items you're thinking of putting in the room?

I would say that you want to avoid any room in your house looking like it has a "theme", like those hotels that offer "the Pirate room" or "the Polynesia room". Or where there is so much bamboo that friends and family who visit say, "Wow, you must really like bamboo [or Chinoiserie or Hollywood Regency etc.]!" instead of saying/thinking, "What a great/beautiful/lovely room!". For me, I wouldn't want any individual elements to overpower the entire space. My other concern would be, with Chinese Chippendale chairs at the kitchen table as well as bar stools at the island, or in the living room with bamboo coffee table and bamboo end tables, the idea that "when everything is special, nothing is special". So having everything bamboo doesn't highlight the focal pieces that are bamboo. Does that make sense?

So if you have a beautiful gold-toned faux bamboo coffee table, that could be a wonderful focal point in the living room, and you could have wood, or painted wood, end tables, or even all-white or blue and white -- or all-green or green and white -- garden stools as end tables, as deco suggested.

Then again, there are some interior designers like Miles Redd who are so good, and who know the rules so well, that they are capable of putting together a room that breaks every rule and looks amazing : ) .

Is there a rule of three or rule of five? I know in landscaping, two identical flanking things OK, but in general, plant in odd numbered drifts. A lot of repetition only if you are really committed to a bold, formal and disciplined style (like the row of vases on the table, that would not be me even though it looks pretty). Whether it's too much or not probably depends on the look you are going for. Nowdays eclectic is in, but if you want to commit to a total look, it has its selling points. My mom tended to collect, and now I have her various collections in different rooms in the house. Placement is often everything! I definitely found some information out there on "the curated home" which goes over some rules for placing things artfully. So odd that something can follow all the rules and look bad and another room can break all of them and still look good. Sigh. I think one no-no would be to have too strong of a contrast from room to room. Like one room full of Chinoiserie and then it is visually next to a bold industrial look room, or something rustic cabiney, etc. Mix and match it all through the house. Mom's little Japanese cottage prints were perfect for the cabin bedroom, for example, but the Zen garden wood block went in the more formal living room. That picture that Decoenthusiast posted almost crosses a line for me, with too many disparate art pieces, but the gorgeous wall color and couch won me over!

Chinoiserie can be part of that over the top, overstuffed chintzy Victorian look, or part of a mid-century modern angular look, for contrast. I like both looks, although some folks react strongly to one or the other.

We are building a home so i don’t have any pictures yet. We have opted to not have a formal dining room so this will be in a large eating area off the kitchen. I have found two Chinese Chippendale inspired chairs i love and is like to use them at the dining table. The table is 78” in length and 38” in depth. I will have 6 chairs total. My issue is i think 6 of these chairs would be too much. But what other style besides a parsons or wing chairs for the end can i combine them with. One also comes in a bar stool. I will need Barstools for our island as well. The island is about 5-6’ from eating area.. what type of Barstools can i put there? This will not be a formal space. I bought a gold toned metal coffee table with a glass top. The metal is shaped like bamboo. The last picture is a barstool but it also comes in a dining chair.

I don't think it would be too much as long as the counter stools at the island are a different style. But if you think so, I'd get four other chairs, something along the lines of these,

and then have same/similar color Chippendale chairs at either end.

I think most of the dining chairs at Ballard Designs go fairly well together if you want another choice.

First, I will say that I'm pretty sure I'm genetically programmed to like anything that's blue and white : ) .

However, to me those two chairs seem pretty competitive. I think if you want two different types of chairs at the same table and one is Chippendale style, then the other style needs to be considerably less competitive, to let the Chippendale chairs be the star. To me, those seem to be two "alpha" chairs, and each one needs to be backed up with a more "beta" chair style that won't outshine the "alpha".

I also can't say "bad" to anything blue and white...

Those, however, look formal to me and you said this is open to the kitchen...I would pass.

I’m with you ladies. Blue and white makes my heart skip a beat ;). That chair i was showing more for style though. Not fabric. That fabric isn’t what i had in mind just what was in the photo. Trying to figure out if an upholstered chair like that would be a good mix.

Is this the kind of arrangement that you could put a couple of fully upholstered chairs on either end of the table and do the faux bamboo chairs as side chairs? I think that would be great with a glass top table.

I get the feeling you might want to look at some photos of Hollywood Regency style. It can be a little over the top, but you're just wanting elements of it (it's kind of what I'm doing in my living room...very loosely of course as I have to incorporate existing stuff). My dining room has a queen anne dining room set but I recovered the seats in a Chinoiserie fabric and purchased a great chandelier that wasn't really liked by the folds here :-/ (that gave me the push to buy it!).

I like this very simple, modern take on Chinoiserie, with the bamboo chairs, blue and white china, and blue and white color scheme accented with a very fresh green.

I have six identical chairs in my dining area at my dining table. It doesn't seem like "too much" although at that point, I think if I had them next to bar stools I would go with a different type of stool. I also think you could do four in the middle, and then go with some type of upholstered chairs at the ends. I would look for an upholstered end chair that had a back that mimicked the shape of the back of the bamboo chairs that I chose, and also hope for similar finishes on the two types of chairs. I would add the blue and white Chinoiserie pattern with a table runner, placemats or napkins or some kind of center pieces. I wouldn't do chair cushions only because a lot of the time that pattern would not be visible. I would love seeing it, so I'm not ruling it out, just saying I'd try and get the most visual bang for my buck. As an aside, I am not a fan of chairs with arms at the ends of tables. In use, they just seem awkward to me and also take up more space when not in use than is necessary and add unnecessary cost to a dining chair. YMMV.

Edited after I saw Penny's photo so say, "I wish there was a LOVE button for a post!" The plus point about having armchairs at the end of a table is that they can do double duty in other parts of the house when not in use for dining. That's how I use my end chairs with arms. Unfortunately they end up being quite tight in my small dining room. But if I had a dining room like the one in that photo, and the money, heck, I'd go all out and definitely get custom upholstered pieces!!

That photo is exactly the look I’m going for except the only wood element will be the table. I want painted chairs since it will be off the kitchen in a great room. The eating area is approx 14’ X 10’. There will be no side boards or anything else in the space. The table is 78” X 38”. I think that would leave a good amount of space for upholstered end chairs.
