Tell me about Ambridge Rose
Comments (32)HERITAGE (English) - shell pink; two trained as climbers. THE PILGRIM (English) - blush yellow; two trained as climbers. These four roses are trained as climbers up a west facing trellis attached to my house. The roses are fronted by a raised flower bed, constructed from native stone, containing reblooming bearded irises in shades of blue-white-lilac-pink, dwarf shasta daisies, dwarf purple coneflower and lavender. Central stone path planted with creeping thyme, johny-jump-up violets and creeping Roman chamomile. New flower border: SHARIFA ASMA (English) - light warm pink Lavender AMBRIDGE ROSE (English) - apricot pink Lavender HAPPY CHILD (English) - canary yellow Stone steps leading up to potting shed. Right side of steps planted with sunflowers and lavender. Left side of steps planted with 2 MOLINEUX (English, yellow blend), annual blue cornflowers, and violets (var. Etain; LOVELY fragrance!). Just to the right, at the top of the steps, against a trellis attached to east facing fence wall: EVELYN (English) - apricot pink ABRAHAM DARBY (English) - smoky pink blushed coppery apricot More Lavender Front of potting shed (facing north) planted with Prince Charles Clematis, foxgloves, native bleeding hearts, monkshood and perennial forget-me-nots (var. Looking Glass and Jack Frost). BTW, the F-R-A-G-R-A-N-C-E!!! Between the irises, then the roses, followed by the chamomile, lavender, coneflower, thyme and sweet violets. It is positively orgasmic. Just make sure to watch out for the bumble bees - their EVERYWHERE. Hope this helps, Patrick...See MoreTell me about The Dark Lady please.......
Comments (15)Deanna, My Braveheart is only in its second year and it did suffer badly from that big Easter Freeze. In fact, I was starting to get worried about it, but recently it has snapped out of its post-freeze funk and is looking like the rose I was so excited about last summer. However, like my other frozen roses, it is a bit shorter this year. Just hasn't had time to get back fully into its regular growing pattern. Presently it is about 3x3, but I think it should grow to be closer to 4x4. That said, I can report that the blooms are a lovely red that stays red; it blooms fairly regularly (hopefully even better next year--if we don't have another horrendous freeze!), and the blooms are long-lasting. It's been very hot here recently, but it handled the heat quite well--a bit of a burn around the edges, but nothing too serious. (I have other roses that just about burned up completely in our 100+ heat.) As for disease, it had quite a few problems as it struggled to recover from the Big Freeze, but now that it is thriving again, I'm seeing very little disease. That is how I remember it from last summer. I think last year I sprayed it a couple times in the spring and a couple times in the fall, and that was all. I'm so happy it is returning to "normal" again because I really, really like this rose. I think you will like it. Kate...See MoreDavid Austin - Boscobel
Comments (36)Thank you Shella, very beautiful garden. PAoK is so pretty and has a nice form and just lovely how you have complimented it with the other plants. The Boscobel proves to be a very photogenic rose in every pix I see of it. I appreciate you and dianela for taking the time to share your pix, I'm looking even more forward to watching the Boscobel grow after seeing these pictures. Seeing them in someone's garden is much better than a catalog. It makes it more real, plus I love seeing other people's ideas. Love your setting....See MoreHaving second thoughts about DA roses in our climate
Comments (27)I am so glad someone brought this up. I, too, am new to growing roses this year (majority DA in my garden), and like sbrklyn, my potted, ownroot, and bareroot DA roses that get full sun started out impressively strong, loaded with gorgeous buds and blooms, but the incessant rain this summer in 6a has unleashed every plague possible on the roses. I have 1 Kordes Earth Angel that is doing markedly "better" in that most of its leaves are intact and it is still at prime foliage level--but I've seen evidence of black spot and what my county extension office determined to be some cane canker. I only use copper and sulphur as directed with diligent management (removing affected leaves and stems, maintaining good air circulation, disinfecting shears per cut, pruning crossing canes, not pruning during wet periods, etc.), but it's often been too wet to apply anything. I'm not ready to give up and dig them out yet, but it's driving me insane. Here is the progress report, from worst to best performing in the garden atm: -Alnwick, ownroot: was covered head to toe in cane canker and had to be completely pruned (canker, botrytis, black spot, powdery mildew) -Evelyn, bareroot (botrytis, canker, black spot, powdery mildew) -Carding Mill, ownroot (botrytis, canker, black spot, powdery mildew) -Golden Celebration, ownroot (botrytis, canker, black spot, powdery mildew) -Lady of Shallot, potted (botrytis, canker, black spot, powdery mildew) -Boscobel, potted (canker, black spot, powdery mildew) -Claire Austin, potted (canker, black spot) -Earth Angel, Kordes: (botrytis, minimal black spot and powdery mildew) -Princess Alexandra of Kent, ownroot (my most disease-resistant Austin atm, I may have pruned slightly for black spot, but no evidence of anything else!) Best wishes in your new home and garden!...See Morenippstress - zone 5 Nebraska
