Will alliums protect lilies from deer?
Comments (4)So far I've been blessed not to have deer bother my lilies. I have a lot of trouble with roses, though. Most fool-proof protection is a circle of welded wire fencing around the plant, or around a whole bed of plants. Another thing I'm trying this year is cut canes from my bamboo and place 3 6' tops with leaves and side branches around the plant to be protected, then running wire around and around going up 6" per ring to encase the plant in bamboo and wire. It seems to be working well so far and doesn't cost a lot like wire fencing. Of course if you have a city garden maybe this would be too unsightly for you, but I have a country garden. Another cheap deer repellant is to blend an egg and some cayenne pepper and a little detergent in water and sprinkle it around on plants. It would have to be reapplied after rain....See MoreDoes Cat protect your vege garden and orchard from critters?
Comments (28)Ginger is just adorable!! If you have a cat that is a good mouser, they most definitely help keep the population of small rodents under control. That is what they were domesticated to do! Both houses I've owned were infested with mice when I moved in. Fortunately, both times I had a good mouser that took care of that problem. They have great patience, stealth, and determination; I watched a former cat wait for hours for a mouse to appear from under the refrigerator. This past winter was brutal - 7 feet of snow in 6 weeks - and the voles were having a field day under all that snow. There was an unusual amount of vole damage to my perennials. Also, the chipmunks are out of control this Spring. They are (or were) running around EVERYWHERE. My "good hunter girl" is taking care of this problem, catching them daily. I am conflicted about the fact that my cat occasionally kills birds too, and have taken great pains to locate the feeders and bird baths so that they are safe from the cat. However, cats are not the biggest killer of birds; by far, it is human destruction of their habitat, followed by collisions with buildings and other structures, windows, and cars. Cats are estimated to kill 200-300 million birds per year in the US; collisions kill up to 1 billion....See MoreWhat are you all doing to protect your veggie gardens from deer?
Comments (5)Welded Wire Fence from Home Depot. I like the 5' tall stuff, 50 feet cost about $45 recently. With your layout, you could probably just make a circle for each bed. I just bend some of the edge wires back inside the circle to hook into the other side of the loop. The fencing will last many years. I have found the green coated stuff to come apart much faster than the plain. Even around a fair sized garden, deer won't usually jump it if there's no clear place to land. After several years deer did jump a couple of my fences last year so I tied bamboo poles on to the fence at intervals and ran wire around at 8'. I have tried heavy T posts with wire run between them and bamboo poles at close intervals, that worked a couple of years then deer started getting through it. For deer repellents, which I consider not really worth bothering with compared to something permanent, I have blended egg and cayenne pepper in water and dribbled it on plants with a dish detergent bottle, and also deer don't like blood meal sprinkled on things... but would you want it on your lettuce....See Moreyour fence system to protect from deer
Comments (2)Before I added chicken wire to the tops of my chain link around the entire back yard (attached with stakes and zip ties, taking the height to 7 ft -- temporary until I get the fencing replaced with something attractive), I used 4' wire fencing around the cluster of trees -- far enough away that the deer couldn't reach over to nibble, but close enough that they didn't have room to jump. They do need landing space to jump, so depending on how your trees are situated you might not need to have the fence so very tall. One of my neighbors has narrow beds and 5" fencing; the narrow but longer rectangles don't give them landing space. Mine are in pots and clustered together, to the same effect. What I need to do is contrive a fully covered/netted enclosure to keep the raccoons from stealing the fruit!...See Morefunctionthenlook
