Comments (38)In addition to Creatives great advice, I would guess Its preslope issues under the "Hot Mop"......A timely continuation of this thread as I am installing A similar hex in my current clients shower. The best thing anyone that wants a tiny hex or any marble shower floor can do is Use a thinbed ( surface applied or Topical ) waterproof membrane. This eliminates a mortar bed that can retain water long term in the event the preslope is inadaquate. You live in the land of the hotmop and along with the hotmop comes a handoff issue. Where the hotmop guy comes in after the carpenter and before the tile guy many times .....there really is no great way to preslope with lumber (yes it can be done) but often times it gets skipped.... now whos to blame?? Im sorry to see you have issues, it looks like a nice shower, if you do resolve to tear it out, request a flood tested "Topical" waterproof shower and be present when the water is drained from the flood test. The inspectors never watch for that........and its a new thread on houzz weekly especially with marble.... In this shower you are seeing A skim coated Surface applied membrane, when the marble gets wet it dries out very quickly as there is no Mass of concrete and sand retaining water ( yet it still requires a proper preslope ). Hope that makes sense - best...See MoreDelicatus Granite behind Range?
Comments (3)Breadandsuch, I am using the same granite. I am doing subways of some sort (crackle, I think) and plan on doing them behind the range. I am not worried about discoloration of grout or tile. You can seal it once a year and do fine. For my job, we use white (ahh!) grout on white tiles in a convenience store environment and they do fine without sealer! I don't think my kitchen could ever create that type of abuse, so I think It will be fine....See MoreSlab backsplash behind range?
Comments (15)I am linking a thread which discusses when the hood is wider than the range, should the backsplash behind the range be the width of the hood or the width of the range. The conclusion seems to depend on whether there are upper cabinets on either side of the hood. If there are upper cabinets, then you should match the backsplash width to the hood width. Otherwise, you will have a 3" sliver on either side of the hood of empty wall between the edge of the hood and the cabinets. My preference is to match the width of the backsplash to the hood regardless, just MHO. Comments (3)Most people seem to agree that if you don't like a bit of patina, you shouldn't use marble. If you don't mind that, then you'll love marble. I would be much less worried about it as a backsplash. Backsplash doesn't get as much wear as a counter and if it does etch, you don't run your fingers over the backsplash often, so you likely wouldn't notice....See More- 6 years agolast modified: 6 years ago
