Monsanto's Roundup Triggers Over 40 Plant Diseases and.......
Comments (48)http://www.forbes.com/sites/timworstall/2012/09/20/monsantos-gm-corn-and-cancer-in-rats-real-scientists-deeply-unimpressed-politics-not-science-perhaps/ "Their claim is that the rats fed GM corn and Roundup got more such tumours earlier than the control group. The criticism of this finding is that the control group was simply too small to allow such an observation to be made with any certainty. And they have not conducted, or at least not presented, the standard statistical tests which would allow they or us to determine whether the results were the outcome of pure blind chance." http://arstechnica.com/science/2012/09/anti-gmo-researchers-used-science-publication-to-manipulate-the-press/ "Any journalist that wanted to receive an advance copy was required to sign a non-disclosure agreement before receiving one. That agreement prohibited the outlet from sharing the results with any outside experts before the embargo lifted. In other words, if a press outlet wanted to be one of the first to cover the story, it would have to run the story without having any experts sanity check the paper." "The embargo lifted during a live press conference from the researchers, hosted in London in cooperation with the Sustainable Food Trust. The SFT conveniently had a press release prepared; a release claiming that the research was "supported by independent research organization, CRIIGEN." However, this neglected to note that the paper's lead author, Eric Seralini, is on the CRIIGEN board." Conflict of interest, and keeping the newspapers from doing any fact checking before publication ... that's not accepted protocol. https://embargowatch.wordpress.com/2012/09/21/stenographers-anyone-gmo-rat-study-co-sponsor-engineered-embargo-to-prevent-scrutiny/ " One of the main reasons for embargoes " if you take many journals at their word " is to give reporters more time to write better stories. Part of how you do that is talking to outside experts. And scientists " ones interested in science, anyway, not those interested in spin and political points " should welcome that kind of scrutiny."...See MoreSpray triggers cancer?
Comments (11)Sorry for my error about classification, which Roseleaf corrected. I now realize I was looking at an Australian MSDS, and their national agency does not classify tebuconazole as a possible carcinogen. The EPA is very cautious, which is probably a good thing. One synthetic rose fungicide in common use that the EPA does not classify as a probable or possible carcinogen is the Ortho fungicide with triforine. Those who are concerned could use this or an organic fungicide like sulfur, which is very safe. About the neurotoxicity of tebuconazole, there was a finding that it caused death of brain cells in rat pups, but this finding has been retracted by the research group as an error. The group also found that tebuconazole produced learning impairment after the pregnant rat was fed 60 mg/kg per day during pregnancy and then the pups fed the same until adulthood. Lower doses did not affect the rats' learning behavior....See MorePanhandle--High Wind Warning (60 mph) & Fire Warning
Comments (12)Jay, What new planting mix are you using? I want to hear about it! This year I'll be planting deep too since my soil moisture levels down deep are good, but soil moisture levels higher up are not good. I'll have to water deeply to make it work and with clay that's not always easy. That's terrible news about the fire near Santanta, KS. I hope everyone evacuates safely and that the firefighters can do their job in a safe and effective manner. With the winds today, I've felt like it was a matter of time before someone had a big fire somewhere. The sky here looks disgusting. For a while, it was a sort of a red dusty look like you get with dust storms blowing in from west Texas. Then, a couple of hours ago it started looking more like grayish-white fog or smoke from somewhere. Now it is yellow and a heavy layer of pollen is settling on the vehicles. We're going to have a whole rainbow of colors in the sky tonight and tomorrow. At least most of us here on this forum will not be endangered by the severe weather expected tonight and tomorrow. Dr. Forbes on The Weather Channel seems deeply concerned about the potential for very severe weather from all this mess, but it should start north and east of most of us. This morning, they interviewed a Storm Chaser guy in Sherman, TX, and asked where he and his bunch were headed today and he said Coffeyville, KS. He said once they got there, they'd check the latest weather data and head for wherever they thought the action would be. Around here, when we have the potential for severe weather that includes tornadoes, I just watch for the storm chaser vehicles. When those vehicles are driving up my road, that's when I head for the fraidy hole. Last year, Chris was out storm spotting with other firefighters and law enforcement officers and they ran into some storm chasers about a quarter-mile to a half-mile from our house. I heard them mention that on the radio and I headed for the cellar. About fifteen minutes later, the tornado touched down at the Red River near us and hop-scotched its way across the county, but didn't do any real damage. I don't really have to watch the local weather radar---I just watch for the storm chasers and that's all the warning I need. Dawn...See MoreSafe space heater in unheated closet
Comments (7)I had that problem once in a rented home. That was in Tompkins County NY. I suspect that uneven blown-in cellulose was base issue. Condensation was a problem in the winter. My parents also had the problem in a closet off the foyer of the home I grew up in. No heat in the foyer so the closet in the 1959 ranch house was a problem. The heat guy extended hydronic heat into the closet and under the floor of the foyer. Later, insulation improvements probably made it unnecessary. If the OP is looking for an inexpensive, temporary solution (particularly a rental), Some radiant (oil-filled) heaters call for 1' clearance. In addition, some have two or three heat settings in addition to the thermostat. Using them at low or medium settings would decrease the temp of the surface significantly. On the other hand, if this is a rental, the landlord should be made aware that the closet is condensing. Damage to the structure will occur....See MoreAnglophilia
