Your tv looks like it is too big for over your fireplace. It is covering the pilasters supporting the second mantel. Try the TV on that empty wall instead, hung at eye level when sitting on your couch, not up so high.

Great space! I agree the tv and accents above the FP is too heavy compared to the other walls. I'd move the sofa perpendicular to the fireplace and face the tv on the big wall. A long console for the tv (eye level) Paint the vent the color the the wall. It's always a challenge with extra high ceilings but just "pretend" the ceilings are 8' high and hang art accordingly. (eye level). You mentioned you like the tv above the FP but I must share with you that it is not the best look for the space.

What do you do with a wall? Put some artwork on it. A big giant piece of artwork in the center. Or 2 pieces on the left and a bigger piece on the right. Or a gallery wall unified in some way (mostly black frames, or mostly gold frames, something like that). Put your scrollwork door piece on the left side of the wall, and some colorful art on the right. I've read professional decorators would say to ignore the upper half of the tall wall, and just decorate the lower wall as if the top part weren't there. I agree with that.

I know you seem happy with the TV fireplace wall, but I gotta tell ya, it is hard to look at your room and not comment on it. If you've never watched a TV at seated, eye-level height, you might not know what you're missing, viewing-wise. But also, the top of the mantel is often a place where it is nice to see a beautiful artwork, or tasteful display on the ledge. So, you're missing out on that, too. That scrollwork piece doesn't belong up there on top of the TV, imo.

I agree with everyone else -- the longing to see that TV moved is tangible in the replies, isn't it? But I also get "I like it as it is leave it alone!" We're all allowed that, it's a human right. So, would you at least consider moving the doors and see how you like that? If you really don't, put them back.

As far as the wall on its own is concerned it is frequently best to consider decorating only the lower area, the human-scale part of it. But many high walls are given special treatment with the top part being used as well. I do like the treatment below, as it seems to me to cover both approaches -- it acknowledges the height of the wall, but makes it much cosier by giving the bottom part its own character with the wood panelling. Not an inexpensive option but you could certainly do it in a way that suits your rustic feel. And you could do it with painted panelling too, if the wood is too dark.

Of course one could also put art on the panelled section, or .... umm ...... the TV?

Gorgeous room but I must say I'm glad I didn't have to pay for those curtains.

The TV is actually too high for comfortable viewing, and that's from someone with a TV over our FP. If you do put a TV over your FP, at least have one that fits inside of the existing surround.

With large walls like yours, you pretty much have to ignore what is above a more modest ceiling height - and treat it as such with art.

I also agree with other that the wood/metal pieces do not need to go above the FP/TV.

No carpet, no drapes--how are the acoustics? It has to be an echo chamber. But to your question. Uncover the high windows. Let them and the double mantle just be there and that is enough. Get some gorgeous drapes for the bottom set, beef up the trim out on all three windows. I don't understand the beautiful mantle and the lack of trim on the windows. The door is unfortunate as one wants matching drapes to flank the fireplace. Again perhaps a door that equals the beauty of the woodwork on the fireplace would help balance it all. The TV above the fireplace debate gets REALLY old on this site. I will leave that one be.

The first thing to do with that wall is put the Tv there honestly the only time a TV belongs above a fireplace is when there is no other place for it. That whole wall could become a real focal point with the T.V storage and display

For decorating purposes, you look only at the lower eight feet of a tall wall. Get the TV off the fireplace and move it to the empty wall on some sort of credenza, and move the metal scrollwork to some other part of the house.

Yes, decorate where the people are. You need curtains, rugs, art, credenza, etc. The location of the tv and screen make the room look out of balance, they aren't decorating the space.

Do you need light control on those top windows? If so, save up for something more attractive and less obtrusive. A professionally installed film would work well. If you don't need light control just leave the windows bare.

It's very expensive and difficult to decorate two story rooms like you see in Houzz photos. The scale of the rooms are usually very different from average homes. For people that don't live in mansions, it's much more cozy and attractive to concentrate on decorating the actual living space.

Agree with others here. The FP wall has too many large focal points that overwhelm and unbalance the rest of the room. I would:

Take down the iron doors.

Put the TV on the other wall, with a nice surround. Or, as mentioned, find a smaller TV that fits within the framing above FP.

Take down blinds on top windows.

Large area rug to arrange furniture on.

We previously had a home half the size of what we have now which makes it harder because we have to start from scratch with everything. We’ve only been here for a month and have a ways to go with decorating. We have a good bit of large purchases to take on first (breakfast table, dining room table and a dock) so as far as decorating, I’m on a tight budget. We ordered a new couch/loveseat and the one in the pictures is a loaner. I definitely agree the room is currently unbalanced but there is only one wall with anything on it. Painting the vent is a great idea. The area seems to stay dim so taking out the blinds on the upper windows will hopefully brighten up the space. Moving the TV might be an option in the future but I would also like other ideas to complete that wall.

You have a solution to two problems right at your fingertips. Well, three actually. Your problems are:

1) there is a large empty wall to fill, causing the room to be unbalanced

2) your very large tv is hung too high

3) you don't have spare funds for decor

The answer to all these problems is MOVE THE TV. Just buckle down and do it. I'm struggling to understand why you are so resistant to this idea.

Put your sofa facing that wall, perpendicular to the fireplace. As funds allow, add a sofa facing the fire. Hang the tv on the wall (Low. Low.) across from the sofa. Put a door on each side of it and as funds allow, a long white tufted bench under it to bridge the gap between the doors. You could also use a long console. White. The idea is to make the two doors and whatever goes under the tv function as one unit, like a built-in cabinet. That should solve all your problems:

1) It will fill the wall

2) the tv will be at a safe viewing height

3) you haven't spent money you don't have

ETA: if you do this, hang the doors and tv so the tops of all are level with each other.

Haning a TV is no small task. Removing it and all the electrical again no small task. I wonder if the electrical was already there when they bought the houses? The architects decided this is where the TV goes? Removing it could leave some very ugly scars and drywalling is not something everyone DIYs. Not saying that is where I would put a TV...but time to let up on it me thinks.

I'll just say this and then we can all move on in our advice: hanging a piece of art, a tapestry, or a mirror where the tv is now would address all the issues of damage to the wall or electrical outlets, etc. being left in plain view.

I could be wrong, but in the photos of the blank wall, in the lower right hand corner of the photos, the fixture to the right of the electrical outlet looks like it could be a cable outlet.

Honoring your request not to move the TV at this time, I would find some taller pieces of artwork that are designed as a series. This would create a very nice horizontal focal point on the empty wall. Perhaps in the future, you could arrange the new furniture to be less against that wall and a nice cabinet could go under the artwork as storage, with a lamp or vases on top.

okay. If you really, really want to keep the tv above the fireplace, I'd relocate the piece above the TV to the large left wall. Move the chair to center that wall and put that piece above the chair. Flank the chair with floor lamps. It will fill the wall space and add layered lighting.
