Is anyone having a Garage Sale this year?
Comments (24)I've had three already in the past 6 weeks and I've done very well. I'm a plantlady (interiors, businesses, residences etc) and with this economy we have lost a few accounts and some plants were coming back to the office from the leases (most accounts own their plants)and we don't have any room for them there. My boss asked me if I wanted them as he was going to throw them out. I jumped at it and took them home. I had already been giving plants to all of my neighbors and freecycle as I get them all the time when we replace plants but here I had a few dozen 5-8 foot plants so I had my roommate make up a sandwich board type sign with signs and arrows on both sides so peeps could see it coming or going down our main street which is just a few houses down the block. WOW! We had people coming by all day and I sold almost every plant. My roomate was amazed at the traffic. I told him to look for tools he didn't want (he had tons of stuff as he's a special effects guy in the studios) and we'd add another sign to our "plants for sale" sign on the sandwich board and see what happens. Guys like tools and Holy Camoly! We were sooooo busy. I had more plants to sell and we did really well that weekend. The third time it was a mix of stuff, plants and tools. I made close to $1000.00 and Bill made in the area of $2500.00. Not too bad for three days work and we got rid of a lot of stuff just sitting in the garage too. The second time we had the sale I had a big pot of chicken and rice soup on the stove and quite a few peeps were shopping while holding a hot mug of soup :-) It was chilly and damp that day. We had some fun, met some neighbors and city council members and made a few bucks. Patti2...See MoreGarage Sale Gestapo !!
Comments (24)my city has this law too and IMO they do not do enough to enforce it. we live at a 3 way stop and our yard is used as a posting grounds for signs for garage sales. can you imagine 20-30 of those cheap, tacky, unreadable, junky looking signs in your front yard from fri thru sunday or whenever we collect them? no one ever comes back to pick them up! one time in 7+ yrs someone came back to collect their sign, we made sure to thank them lol. 3 weekends ago code enforcement came to pick up signs and find their owners so they could get warnings about leaving those signs in public or private properties which is illegal. we did not call them and were unaware of the sign portion of the law. there is a law about only 2 garage sales per yr which i totally support. there is a house w/in my view that has already had several this yr and they keep this gawd awful cheap tacky blue canopy up for weeks at a time for their sales. that in itself is also against the law. few weekends ago someone had a sale who lives on main corner and our city police had to go and direct traffic around all those who stopped to get junk. i sure hope the city billed them for the help! i think 2 a yr is plenty, more than that & you need to get a real job that does not bring traffic clogging parked cars who block streets and often pull out w/o looking and drive & park on our lawns. now that we know about the sign law we will call code enforcement. it's too bad it has to be that way but if they picked them up it wouldn't be so bad except we have to mow and edge that part of the front yard after the weekend...which if that isn't done every week is also against code, as the code enforcement lady informed my dh just as he was starting after the weekend junk sales signs could be taken down ~ liz...See MoreEstimate on converting garage into livable space
Comments (11)A lot. A vague answer to go along with your vague question. Where in the world do you live? Urban? Suburban? Rural? Costs vary wildly. Do you have to replace the garage with a new garage as a part of this project? Do you have to move the driveway? Will you be enlarging the present garage to get everything you want? What kind of foundation is under the garage, and is it suitable for supporting new living space? Is it already plumbed, or will you have to cut into its flooring for installation of water/sewer lines? If you have a septic tank, will it handle this additional load? Is the garage insulated (walls and ceiling)? Is it already heated/cooled, or do you have to provide a new supplementary heating and cooling source? What about governing body regulations/permits? Are you going to do any of the work yourself? And multiple other questions....See MoreNeighbor has broken car parked in easement. About to close on house.
Comments (24)Did you make it a contingency in the contract to have the car removed? If not, the sellers don't have to do anything. And you really have no 'legal' recourse - with regards to having the car moved - for backing out of the contract. Most people never look at property surveys after they buy their home and depending on how long the neighbors have been owners, they may have no clue that the car is actually on your property. Considering you're closing soon, I'm sure the last thing you need is people telling you 'walk away,' especially if its not an option without *you* getting sued for failure to follow through with the contract. Not to mention, I have no idea how much anxiety/stress or whatever else you've gone through with your home search, so offering a non-solution is surely making this situation more stressful for you. Depending on where you live you may be able to anonymously report the car as abandoned. Where I live this can be done online or by calling 311. All you have to do is give the address of the car and a description. I did this just last week for a car that is 'abandoned on private property.' The car is actually a safety hazard since rats and other animals can make homes in it. The city came out within 3 days and posted some sticker on the window. I'm not sure what the owner has to do to follow-up, but they won't do anything because the car doesn't even have windows. The city will tow it within 30 days if the citation isn't followed up on. Hopefully the solution for you can be this simple....See MoreLars
