Has anyone tried eating redbud seeds like lentils?

I've read that redbud pods are edible in the spring, being used like snap peas since they are a member of the legume family. I've also read that the mature seeds are 25% protein. I've been planting a lot of redbuds into the tree and shrub mix on my acreage, with my first thought being that they would be great as a forage food source for my flock of chickens. They ate the few handfuls of seed I've given them as a test with enthusiasm, and no ill effects followed.

Then, while scarifying a handful of redbud seeds in hot water overnight and noticing how the fertile ones plumped up nicely, it dawned on me they look an awfully lot like the lentils I love to use for sausage and lentil soup.

So, has anyone else tried this before? I guess I could make a small pot and use my chickens as guinea pigs again :-)
