Thank you. I'm very happy to read your response as I have two Scarlet Oaks (about 2" caliper as I planted them in 2013) as well. Beautiful trees--perhaps my favorite--and good for screening as they retain their leaves all winter when nearly every other tree in Michigan has no leaves. The diversity of when leaves color up is key for me. My Scarlet Oaks are already a deep...scarlet color of course. My goal is to surround them with a true red fall color tree and I think the one I saw today is that type of tree. I just wish I knew what tree it is.

Thank you for all of the advice. The tree was here when I moved in last fall, so had no choice in type or placement :) Regardless of its desirability, or lack thereof, it is literally the only shade tree I have in the backyard, so it is not coming down! Also, the landlord is tearing down the house after he gets it paid off in a couple of years, so it's not going to get the chance to grow into a big problem. My friend is coming this fall to prune it back, so he will make sure my power lines are safe :)

Carriere hawthorn. Common in Seattle, popular, often planted --A. L. Jacobson, Trees of Seattle - Second Edition (2006) who also gives locations for larger examples elsewhere in town, including one in the Aboretum 41 ft. high, with an average crown spread of 50 ft. (~2005). If you've ever sat in the north part of the holding lanes at the Edmonds end of the Edmonds to Kingston ferry route all those trees planted along there are the same thing. Like many trees this becomes more spreading with age, with the Arboretum example averaging 9 ft. wider than tall when measured by Jacobson.
