Can I supplement the sunlight on my balcony?
Comments (7)A foot candle is one lumen of light hitting per square foot or 10.76 lux. I seem to recall that you posted this question in another section and said you were getting four hours of direct light and another 8 hours of ambient light per day. That should be mo-re than enough, unless you get a bunch of cloudy days in a row. Mike...See MoreCFL supplemental light advice for side growth
Comments (4)I have CFL growing experience - lots of it. Even tried an experiment trying to grow a Delicious tomato (indeterminate). Great until it reached about 15" in height. Perhaps if you had been mo-re specific in exactly what you are doing it would have generated mo-re responses? What type of plant-s? Indy, Determinate, Dwarf? How much area are you hoping to cover? Will they be in an area where the walls are covered are covered with Mylar or painted white? Will you trim the bottom leaves or let them grow? I'll presume you are growing four plant-s in 1' wide containers, two rows of two. They are determinates that will not get much over four foot tall, and the bottom leaves will be cut off once they start to turn the least bit yellow. Going out on a very weak limb, my guess is a minimum of 50 watts per side, 200 watts total. There is an iron-clad law about growing that one cannot get around - plant-s need X-number of mols per day to produce fruit. (A mol is a measurement of the total light intensity a plant gets, sort of like a rain gauge measures rainfall over a total day, not drops per minute.) You can Google to determine how to calculate mols/day needed or search this forum - I have posted the info. Leaves contributing to photosyntheses need the minimum of mols per day if you want great production. HTH, Mike...See MoreI could use some advice re: lighting
Comments (12)I like the "new black foyer light." Are you saying you'll have 5 of the semi-flush in a hallway? Can they all be seen at the sames time? Even if just two or three can be seen at the same time, I think the Morningside fixture is the best choice. The Colonial Manor is too busy and when you multiply it by 5 - BUSY! :) I disagree that using a lot of the same finishes is boring - and not because most of mine are the same finish. Mine are functional, fit the room they are in and are virtually invisible. I used numerous Hubbardton Forge fixtures (old world, not the craftsman style they make), a chandelier from our last home and 4 antique sconces I brought from our last home as well. I do agree with Matt on recessed lights. I can't stand them, but that's just me. We do have them in the kitchen, so according to DH I won't cut my hand off while cooking. Also in the bathrooms since I don't like bathroom sconces or over the mirror lighting. Not saying these choices are bad or ugly, they are just not me. I used four metal sconces each in the great room and MBR, both with cathedral ceilings instead of recessed. They are open at both top and bottom, creating a wonderful ambiance at night....See MoreSupplements and a fab side effect that could change my life!
Comments (15)Thanks Annie, I did give half an attempt at this before with no luck in my area. So, IâÂÂll give it another go. I was thinking today that one of the other reasons I didnâÂÂt go to the sleep clinic is that my many online searches on my sleep problems never showed anything that pertained to me so I got a bit discouraged about it all. Today however I came across some info on Ciradian Rhythm sleep disorders CRSDs or CSDs and found my fit. There are five types, I am a match for the Delayed Sleep Syndrome. My brother also had some sort of sleep syndrome. He would walk around in a sound sleep and sometimes talk or seem agitated. It was hard to wake him. Wrttersblock, maybe I'll meet you at the clinic one of these days. If we end up going there are not many around our neck of the woods....See More- 6 years ago
