Tufting headboard using old canvas ideas pls

I have an old large canvas and I have a memory foam pad now being replaced with a new one. I want to cut and put foam on top of the canvas and staple fabric around to the stretcher bars & frame to make a headboard. The quandry is tufting it. There is no need for a wood backing in this case but if I want to tuft it, then will the canvas backing simply tear where the tufting cord comes through to get tied? The tufting cord would go thru the fabric, foam and canvas to get tied. What if I'd place pieces of cardboard or something similar on the back side at each button cord and then tie my knots? Would the cardboard keep canvas from tearing and allow the button to escape? Maybe hot glue around the canvas hole first? Or, do you think the canvas would simply be good enough? I sure would like to hear any thoughts you have and I thank you.
