I think the s/d is semi dwarf, meaning the tree should grow to 12-15 feet tall as opposed to a full size, standard tree. Red delicious appears to be self-sterile or self unfruitful, meaning it needs a cross-pollinator. You've picked two, golden delicious and jonathan, that will both work as cross pollinators. Another red apple will not work as a cross pollinator. I think you've got it! I'd look for trees as least 3 or 4 years old so you can get some production going in the next few years. You've waited long enough! I'm no expert, for sure, I just have 3 apple trees, a golden delicious, a granny smith and a honeycrisp. The golden, supposed to be self-fertile, grew for 10 years without once giving an apple. The year after I planted the granny smith I got a bumper crop from the golden. I think it just wanted a new friend, lol! I think Ken gave you some good advice, head over to the Fruit and Orchard forum. They may be able to give you some good tips. This spring my apple tree did not blossom or leaf out as it usually does. The leaves are sparse and folded inward. Many of the blossoms are black. I do have some apples on the tree but not nearly as many as usual. What is the problem?

I came across your post. If it's Salvia coccinea your talking about, you can plant these seeds anytime. In my zone 8a, they re-seed on their own all summer. This is one of my favorite plants and the hummingbirds love it, too.

Not sure why no one else responded, but if you're still looking for answers I'll say what I would think the issue is, though pictures will get you better advice. First, note that the bulbs often have red spots as a result of physical injury. That said I would also be concerned if I had pealed off an outer layer and found a red spot inside on the bulb. I have a hard time seeing a difference between the red splotch virus and regular damage discoloration so always worry when I see any red. But so far my bulbs have been fine. The white fuzzy stuff does sound like too much moisture is being retained one way or another. Each time you repotted, did you water again? I would not have. I also wait until my pot is bone dry before watering well. I used a flat, wooden coffee stirrer. I keep it in the pot pushed all the way to the bottom. Before watering, I pull it out slowly and check if it is dry or not. If it's bone dry, I water again. I would encourage you to try again if you didn't manage to save these two. I read on here years ago that master gardeners don't reach that level until they've killed at least a thousand plants, or something like that. :-)
