Comments (9)the state of Hawaii has very strict agricultural rules. all luggage must pass an agricultural inspection, especially plant cuttings has to be approved for transport to the Mainland (continental United States).Hawaii has agricultural pests that would ruin crops on the Mainland therefore do not buy unapproved cuttings,it will be confiscated at the airport All baggage bound from Hawaii to the U. S. Mainland is subject to pre-flight inspection by the U. S. Department of Agriculture. Restrictions on the movement of fruits, plants, live snails, and other items from Hawaii to the Mainland are enforced to prevent the spread of fruit flies and other hazardous plant insects and diseases. Please report all agricultural items in your possession to the agricultural inspectors. Inspection stations for check-in baggage are located in front of the airline check-in counters while hand carried articles will be inspected at the security check points. Be prepared to open and close your baggage and parcels for x-ray machine inspection. For further information call the U. S. Department of Agriculture at (808) 861-8490. Additional information is available on USDA predeparture passenger baggage inspection notice for travelers from Hawaii to the U.S. Mainland and Guam....See MoreAnyone have Vanilla vine cuttings available on Oahu?
Comments (13)I got a cutting from Lyon Arboretum. I also bought one at a farmer's market at the shopping center where Costco Hawaii Kai is. Since you live on the west side, the Oahu Urban Garden Center is your best bet. See randag's post. The Oahu Urban Garden Center is adjacent to Home Depot Pearl City. My vanilla vine has produced 3 crops so far. 1st year it blossomed, only 3 attempts at pollination took, and the ants got the beans before I could. Second year, I finally figured out how to pollinate, and got a maybe 3 dozen beans. Third year (2011), smaller crop because I didn't fertilize, so after 2011 harvest, I will be fertilizing. Note that it took several years before it bloomed, but I admit to neglecting it....See MoreHawaii--Designed gardens/landscapes to visit
Comments (8)I'm bumping this up because I did have a wonderful visit to Hawaii, especially to experience its history and its gardens. Thought others might be interested too--even you all who live there. We often never go see what is in our own backyard. I went to all of the gardens mentioned in the above post and they were memorable. Hawaii's natural history and geology are extraordinary. Reading about it and seeing it made the experience of a lifetime. I am so happy about the new national monument in the northern islands, which hopefully will help preserve this special place....See MoreUrban Garden Center - Honolulu Hawaii
Comments (19)Oh My! is a good name. I really like dark-color roses, since they don't fade in sun nor in heavy rain. Enjoy looking at your pics. once more, esp. ginger snap, and dark-pink on Nicole Carole Miller. Love song is very nice, deep blue. Always crazy about Yves Piaget, but it's not hardy in m zone 5a. Thank you for posting & look forward for more....See MoreAnn9BNCalif
