Need help on how to prepare my Dahlia for winter
Comments (2)If you are overwintering them in the ground, the stalks should be cut slightly below the surface and covered with a tarp and mulch to avoid pooling of water around tubers when they are completely dormant. This may or may not work for you, depending on how cold it gets where you are as well as how wet the soil gets while tubers are dormant. I am in zone 5-6 with lots of frozen earth, so I always dig. However, I did a fair amount of research on overwintering clumps in-ground, as some in this garden zone have been successful when plants were in a protected area like next to a house foundation or solid wall. One grower in zone 5 claims to overwinter regularly with tarps and mulch, but since tubers need to be dug and divided regularly anyway, it doesn't make sense to me to risk leaving them in-ground over winter....See MoreWintered Dahlias- now what?
Comments (3)At my end of the foothills, nights are low 40s for the next week although the next few day times should be sunny and warm. If the soil in the pot is damp and cold, dahlias rot. If you want them earlier, you could water and set the pots in the sun AND bring them back in at night (it's too cold for them outside at night now). I'd prefer the nights stay more in the 50s for your pots to be outside - they cool off faster in pots than in the ground. If your soil in the garage pots is bone dry, you could have dead dried out tubers. They do need moisture in the soil to grow well - don't wait for signs of growth before watering the pots - go by temperatures and put a bit of water on the pots if they are bone dry (don't soak)....See MoreOver wintering Dahlias

Comments (14)Nice rouge! And I know this is a variety you enjoy! I've only taken one or two peeks at my stored dahlias and it's not looking good. I got lazy last year and instead of doing my usual layers of misted newspaper and peat moss in cardboard boxes, I just threw the tubers in paper bags - another method someone swore by. Don't think it worked for me. I think maybe my basement is drier than I thought lol. Then, I was going to pot them up early and put them in a cold frame. Dragged out the frame, climbed over mountains of stuff in the garage because of course the storm windows to put on top were against the back wall of the garage, somehow managed to climb BACK over mountains of stuff carrying a pane of glass, only to find the glass is about six inches too small for the frame. Argghhh! So, my tubers are still in bags, probably all dried up, and I hope to get to them in a week or so. Luckily I did buy a new Fleurel tuber because I didn't want to risk losing the ones I had and being without at least one! Glad to see others have had a successful overwintering! :) Dee...See Morepinkmauisunset (Zone 5-Central MA)
