Any New Year Garden Resolutions?
Comments (21)Here's mine: 1 - No new roses! (no room) 2 - Deadhead, clean up more often! 3 - Dig out invasive underplantings! 4 - Figure out ways to stop the new dog from chewing up my sprinklers and roses! 5 - Spray deer repellent regularly (damn dog doesn't deter them!) 6 - Replace dead roses with ones from the pot ghettos, thus shrinking the pot ghettos! 7 - Dig out the Bermudagrass that has invaded one whole area of the yard, engulfing 4 rose beds!! Auugggghhhh!!! 8 - Spend more time outside! (Get away from the computer!) We'll see how many of these get done......See MoreHappy New Year! - Any gardening resolutions?
Comments (14)Eduarda do plant a winter jasmine I think you will really enjoy it, this is a bit long winded but....I also grow winter jasmine, mine is quite old somewhere around 40 years. Not only a beautiful plant when covered in flowers but is also very attractive when in the green, so to speak. It is tough and reliable, depending on the weather it can start blooming in November and continue on through the winter or if it's a really cold and stays cold I've seen it hold off on flowering till the beginning of March. The year it did this it put on a magnificent show. My or I should say taken ownership of W.J. is growing on a trellis on the side of the neighbor's carport, why on the neighbor's carport you might ask, well my neighbor at the time planted it on her carport but it's planted in our driveway. Years later after their place had been sold several times another survey was done and what do you know the carport encroaches 8 inches onto our property as does the concrete retaining wall. The poor lady who owned the house at the time had just sold to a young couple and the whole deal was going to fall through, we went to her lawyer with her and signed a waver to the effect the new owners could have access to our driveway if they need to work on their concrete carport. I've also claimed my side of their concrete retaining wall (on our property too) I've covered it in ivy, clematis and other stuff. This is now the wall that helps contains my little courtyard, use to be the top end of the driveway but that's another story :o). I prune the jasmine right back to stubs every spring and I'm rewarded with fresh green growth by summer which is lovely to look at even when not in bloom. Comments (15)I resolve to get rid of the weeds in the flower beds this year, including the bermuda grass!!! Can't say I'll actually get that one done. lol Work, work, work. No wasting time this year. My garden needs my attention terribly. Last year I had so many different family problems, I'm already behind (and still can't do anything due to some medical issue, but will soon be able to go full force). I think I'll keep this one as I'm embarrassed of my garden, but it couldn't have been helped. Take more pictures. I always think there's something not quite right, so I don't take any pictures. The only pictures I have are right after a project is done, and the plantings look so pitiful. I'm determined to actually take pictures of my garden this year. It will be a great reference guide. I wanted to start a gardening journal, but am not sure exactly how to organize it, so I'm not sure I'll do this, but am still thinking about it, so I'll probably start journaling in some way just to get started. One more maybe resolution: start a vegetable garden. I have been saying for about three years now that I'm going to do this, and I think maybe this year I really will! (We'll see.) Great post. Made me really think about what my garden needs as well as what I want....See MoreHappy New Year! Any Cooking Resolutions for 2013?
Comments (26)Jude, when we cleaned out the fridge, I had three jars of Vietnamese dipping sauces, all of them different, to be used with spring or summer rolls. They keep for a long time, but I need to use them up. I also had three different Thai marinades, and I should have used the old ones instead of making new ones. I have horseradish root in the fridge, and I need to make a sauce with that as well. Pam, when Bernard comes to do landscaping in the fall, he helps me clean out the fridge by eating leftovers. Maybe I can resolve to make smaller portions. I bought smaller plates so that we would eat less, but that strategy has not been working that well. When I make pasta, I only make just what we can eat at one meal (unless it is lasagna or fresh ravioli), but that is one of the few times I cook just what we can eat. Another is fish - I only buy enough fish for two servings at a time because it is expensive. Lars...See MoreLilyfinch z9a Murrieta Ca
