Happy New Year to all.

I am ready for spring, but this weather isn't. It has been several years since we have had a cold winter, but, it seems this one may be quite cold for Alabama. When it stays below freezing for several days, that is atypical, but it is the case. The silly daff is still blooming. I have the hanging plants from the puppy garden in the greenhouse. We will see if they survive this cold spell, but they have done well so far.

Alex: Thank goodness for gardening catalogs this time of year. I know that many daylily vendors won't know what survived until later this year, but it makes me so antsy when I can't see everyone's updated catalog by Jan. 1st. And what's this deal with Facebook? I and many people I know don't do Facebook and won't for various reasons. If you are a vendor please at least list the varieties on an easily accessible website for we "old schoolers". .... Maryl

I swore after getting rid of another chunk of daylilies this fall that I wouldn't add but 3 this year. Well, with this winter upon us now I may have to add a few to my list. The high today was in the teens and it's going to stay this cold for awhile. I had a Gerbera daisy in a pot in a very protected place that had over wintered outside up until this last killer front moved in. Now it's toast. On the bright side, I hope all the bad bugs are toast along with it........I'm not ready for spring yet. Still enjoying my vacation inside, but I do wish everyone a happy New Year in 2018 with good health for all their family and loved garden companions..........Maryl

Happy New Year to all! Just trying to survive the polar vortex, with 4" of snow cover here. My small dogs are not happy outside! Just finished the first post for the alphabet!

Dottie, Once a year at Christmas we have indulged in a special Martini (not truly a Martini) for the family. This year it was the Midnight Espresso Martini 1oz. each Bailey's, Frangelico, Kahlua, Vodka, Espresso coffee and 1/2 - 1oz. milk over ice in shaker and enjoy. Just a little treat for Christmas. Rck

Happy New Year to you too! I love darling Babe...always have admired your pictures of him. Love, love ginger kitties. And of course, dear sweet Bowie too! They are always so precious to see. Your birdfeeder reminds me of mine, overflowing with birdies. This winter is a record-setter for us in bird visitors. We have never had so many at our feeders. We put up feeders everywhere and it is paying off. We've an assortment of different feeders and suet cages and are delighted with so many kinds of birds coming. Lots of snow here too and very cold temps, so I'm glad we can help the birds get through the tough winter. Pretty daylily too! Celeste

And the same to all of you here! Not to be mean ... but here, in our little sheltered coastal valley, roses are rejoicing that they have had some rain (which may be over for the year) and bursting out with bud and bloom . . . "De la Vina Mystery" (One of the many found "almost-La Reine" roses.)

Maryl, how could you possibly not have new ones to look forward to? I can't wait to see them this year even though I know from experience this will be a faint impression of what will come. Sherry, it isn't nearly as cold here as other places, but 16 is plenty cold for the deep south. I am with you, Maryl, I am oping the bugs will "take a dive" this year. We hadn't had a real winter in several years, but looks like that won't be the case this year.

4 below here and wind chill 13 below, in Dodge City, Ks. No moisture here since early last summer. My last water bill still way over $100.

Happy New Year to all of you too. It is quite cold here. It's been under freezing for a week. They say it may warm up next Monday to a balmy mid-30's or so.

Happy New Year everyone! It's much colder here than usual - 7 degrees this morning. I planted several seedlings and some plants in pots in October. It will be interesting to see if any survive this weeklong stretch of temps near zero.

What a way to start a new year. It's almost 2 in the afternoon and it is zero degrees. We haven't had temps this cold for several years. It is sunny today which helps the heating in the greenhouse. The daylilies have some snow cover. Hopefully it is enough to provide some protection.

Pretty cold here as well - 12 F at the moment, but it's supposed to drop to minus temps overnight for the next few nights, I think. Sticking inside by the woodstove, looking at gardening catalogs. Happy New Year, all!

Maryl - FB has changed much of the business world. Well, the Net has done it, rather; FB is just a symptom of it, albeit a large one and getting bigger all the time. There'll be no getting away from it now, unless everything comes crashing down.

Our business remains old school/brick-and-mortar, but even we have a FB site for the bookshop. We don't sell on it, it's just there for all the 'phone techies' to see we still exist. I have to laugh sometimes when I see someone sitting in Brazil or Italy, liking us on FB! Of course, it still could be an old customer, as we've had - and still have - some seasonal internatl customers - LOL.
