Comments (42)Oh how I feel your pain! Another spouse of an engineer here who will not hire out house projects. My engineer DH suffers from renovation ADD where he bounces around from major project to the next without ever completing them. Current list of ongoing projects: he removed a kitchen pantry to make a mud room and consolidate 2 back doors into 1, not completed, then he moved on to finish the basement, and add a bathroom and new laundry room, that's pretty close but the bathroom and laundry room are just getting started, built ins in our master bedroom he started 3 years ago and I got impatient and hired a carpenter to complete, but our carpenter is even slower than he is! Then our main bathroom shower stall leaked he began demo on the shower and made a temporary shower over the tub but halted that project to concentrate on the basement. Now I have studs and rotted floor exposed where our shower stall was, I'm estimating it will look like this for about 2 years before he can focus some attention on it. Our kitchen was renovated by him in 2007, still needs a backsplash installed. But I'm not allowed to hire someone to install. Oh and he helped my cousin who is an electrician re wire out house when we moved in and never patched the holes in the ceilings and walls. It's on the "to do" list. Oh the joys of being an engineers wife!...See MoreJ.D. Salinger sues over reported 'sequel'...
Comments (2)Hi CMK--Yes, I had heard about this awhile back. I thought it was fascinating but not surprising since Salinger is so famously and fiercely protective of his privacy and work. Other authors--JK Rowling, for example--have fought similar infringements. I'm not that familiar with copyright law, but I expect that at some point Catcher in the Rye will fall into the public realm and his work will be fair game to playwrights, authors, directors, etc. I just don't know when the copyright to those works expires--as you note, it can pass into the hands of others to protect the literary estate. But we've all seen Virginia Woolf's work imitated in The Hours, or Jane Austin sequels--so it probably will happen someday. James Joyce's only living heir (grandson) has successfully interfered with scholarly studies of all kinds concerning Joyce's life and works since the 1980's. The grandson has even going so far as to destroy letters that Joyce's daughter Lucia had written to him. He is famously difficult and obstructionist, even objecting to public readings and refusing permission for extracts or quotations of Joyce's work in scholarly works. He is a kind of rampaging anti-intellectual (by his own description, I think) who thinks that Joyce's works should be read, and not studied, and he disparages any attempts to do so. (See The New Yorker, "The Injustice Collector" by D. T. Max, 19 June 2006.) In my opinion, this kind of protectionism is dreadful. So while I sympathize with authors like Salinger or JK Rowling who want to protect the sanctity (and proceeds) of their work, it is really distressing to me that a literary estate can pass into hands like those of Joyce's grandson, effectively diminishing the author's works by inhibiting research and to some degree, free speech.
