Comments (10)Here's what an ancient plumber explained to me, but I won't swear to the validity of the explanation. Because the radiators of old (you know, those big hulking ones that stand on the floor under every window) are exposed, i.e. people can touch them, they can't run as hot as baseboard radiators can. If you let those old, hulking radiators cool down, it takes a long time to heat them up again because you're not running very hot water through them (I forget what the guy said, maybe something like not hotter than 120 degrees; anything hotter and people would burn themselves when touching a radiator). But baseboard radiators can run much hotter because they're protected from casual contact with people (or pets). Thus, it doesn't matter if you let them cool down at night because when you need heat, you can run 170-180 degree water through them and dump a bunch of BTUs into the room very quickly. So perhaps the person who told you not to turn down your thermostat at night was harkening back to the days when radiators had to circulate cooler water as a safety issue, and since the water running to them had to be cooler, you were better off not letting them cool down at night because they would take a while to start putting noticeable amounts of heat into the rooms in the morning. If you only have baseboard radiators, then I'd say turn down the heat at night and save the gas. (I even lowered the operating temperature on my boiler a little bit (i.e. lowered the temperature at which the pump starts circulating water and lowered the maximum temperature the boiler heats the water to) and saved some money without noticing any difference in how quickly the house heats up.)...See Moreneed help with turning heat down
Comments (5)lyban tell us about the type of electric heat you have. how many degrees of setback do you program while sleeping? in general,I have always found a large setback at the thermostat for electric heat is a poor cost saving strategy. FROGs known as "finished room over garage" are notorius for even cooling and heating. This type problem is usually an indication of poor insulation and/or ductwork design sizing. I have never liked the idea of closing vents and the door. if the draft is such an issue, I suggest installing some electric baseboard heat to temper the air in the room. While you describe this room as a guest room, I will assume it is unusable due to the cold condition. I just don't know of an inexpensive method to solve your problem. Sorry. Comments (2)" I had a guy come out and he replaced the dual run capacitor." I could give you a few reasons the unit might be misbehaving (all of them just guesses) but a compitent tech on site can tell you exactly why. Who'e idea was it to replace the capacitor? If it was the tech's,call him back for a free diaginosis,if it was your's stop going on the net like this and telling techs what to change....See Moretrichopilia suavis (beginner's luck)
Comments (6)Nice comments, thanks! The scent from this one bloom is seriously powerful, can smell it six feet away. For comparison purposes, it is actually just like a visit to the Philadelphia Flower Show - strong Spring floral. I guess the drawback is that it only lasts for a week or so (from what I've read)....See MoreLyban zone 4
