Do you ask about having a tub for your own needs/enjoyment, or you're wondering about resale in the future?

If for your own needs-you know them better than anyone here:) I just want to point out that needs of today sometimes change tomorrow. Consider how you usually live, like to live everyday..do you take baths often? Will using stand alone tub present a challenge? (they're extremely pretty until one's not a graceful swan anymore) Where will you store things -stand alone tubs need to look uncluttered to be pretty, even more than other tubs, so consider storage solutions, pretty side tables and such. Jets-I personally love to use jets but don't like how they look, so to me it's a no..but maybe you're more practical than me. Everybody's different. Consider everything big and small before making a decision,

If for resale-depends. Most will rightfully tell you having one tub in the house is enough. To me personally, that would be a very big minus, huge actually, because I take baths a lot. Having said that, if I'm not on the fence but am truly in love with the house I'll accept it with its shortcomings. If it makes sense of course and can be realistically changed down the road (once I was truly in love with the house but it had two bedrooms while we needed four..))

I am older, and have mobility issues. We just moved into a home just because it did not have a tub. I need a walk in shower. This new to us home is best for our aging years. Granted it is not fully ADA compliant (1947), but it works well for us. Build what works well for you. In your case, one tub in the house should be fine.

We are in the process of designing a total overhaul of our master bath which currently has a ridiculously large tub. Which we don't use. And a small shower, which we do use. There are two other tubs on this level of our house *and* we're not planning on moving within the next few years, so we feel good about removing (and not replacing) this tub.

So that's what I'd offer: is this a choice for you or are you thinking of selling within the next few years? Do you have other tubs in the house?

Don’t bother unless you plan to use it frequently.

From what I see (I'm a Realtor), tubs in the master suite have largely fallen out of favor and have been replaced by large showers. There are some people that have to have a tub in the master, but it seems to be an extremely small percentage of the market in my area. A tub for the children to bathe is typical, but that tub is not in the master suite, it is in one or more of the other baths.

I'm in the "extremely small percentage" of homeowners who want a big tub in the master bath. Love, love, love to relax and soak my weary muskles in the bathtub. To each his own, right? :)

So, as others have stated, if you won't use it, don't put it in IF you have a tub elsewhere in the home.

I sold my previous home in less than a month -- no master tub, but a huge shower. It was a 4,000+ sf house and no one blinked about the lack of a tub. The two upstairs full baths had tubs.

In my current home, I have a standalone 1933 pedestal tub in my master bath, which I love and use every other day.

I appreciate all this feedback, too. We looked for a resale house for about 8 months, all recent builds that had freestanding tubs. And now are about to build our own house, and every houseplan that we've seen (as in, other houses that our selected architect has built) has a freestanding tub. We do not take baths, there will be a bathtub in the other bathroom on that same level. And plan to age in place in this house, so we need a curbless shower, NOT a bathtub that would not be easy to get into.

i was thinking walk in tub for the elderly? arent they supposed to be deeper since you are sitting on a bench? seems like better coverage vs laying down in a flat tub? i do see used units for sale but i always worry about the door seals.

I soak in the big tub, have a fireplace right there...and a TV. Turn the jets on for a few minutes. Years ago...DH & I used to sit in the tub, talk for an hour and catch up with what was going on in each others world.

Bath bombs are in-style with young people....you can't use them in a shower.

A tub in the master is a must for me. I like baths and wouldn’t want to go down the hall to use the one in the kids bathroom. But it’s all about your needs.

I don't have a tub in my master, we don't even have a master bath. But if I were to move, that would be a must for me. I love a long, hot bath before bed.

But, unless you plan to sell your home in the next few years, who cares? Do what you want for you, in your space.

Nicole my daughter, 10 uses her bath bombs in the shower. She also makes smaller shower bombs for her friends because many of her friends do not like taking baths that much or between school and sports have little time before bed to take a bath. They put them on the floor in the water stream they bubble the feet and add aroma therapy with the steam.

I opted for a steamy large jetted shower over a bath tub. Initially I wanted a pretty soaker tub with air jets but they were all much shallower than my main hall bath's 1920s tub which is actually a shorter distance from my side of the bed than my master bath tub would have been anyway. So we saved the money and added loads of storage and extra shower heads instead of a master tub.

I thought I would still be using my hall tub weekly like I use to but I find using the jets and than sitting on a bench in the steam to be ten times more pleasurable than the bath. I have only used the tub once last year. My kids prefer my shower now to baths as well.
