Aw-w-w-w-w-w.. . . . . . He looks so cuddly! Frosty is a good name for him. I hope Mama gets friendlier and more trusting of you in time. Could you get close to her before Frosty arrived?

Welcome Frosty! A Christmas baby!!

Mama would come to the fence and take treats, as would Tramps, the other donkey I got at the same time, that I think is her son. The vet said he is 2 1/2 years old....she had to pull one of his teeth when she came to geld him. Their baby teeth are like caps on the permanent ones and he didn't lose one of them when the permanent one started in.

I gave her three big piles of hay in a dry area, up against the fence and the woods, so she would be sheltered, since I couldn't get her in the barn. She had him in the mud....high spot, but muddy.

I worried about her because she was so huge. I am so glad she had him okay and except for him being a little crumpled from being folded up in there, they are okay, and he will be fluffy and straightened out in no time. I hope he will tame down easier than she and Trampas. I just imagined when she was rescued from the hurricane, they had to rope her and that has given her a bad opinion of people. Donkeys have long memories, but I am sure she will eventually get over it.

I keep saying "he"....Frosty could be a "she". I hope he is a she...because I will have to have him gelded and that is $250, but well worth it because they make a better pet.

Awww, so cute. I wish mama was a little more trusting so you could socialize baby Frosty but that will probably come, just later. That fuzzy face is adorable, hope he keeps it for now and doesn't smooth out until it warms up a little.

Awwww, Frosty is adorable! I wasn't expecting him to be so hairy! Is he tall for his age? He seems tall next to his mother.

When foals are born in the winter, they come out with longer hair than foals born in the spring and summer. Mama was sooo big. Her other son, Trampas is not nearly as big as she is. I thought he was only about 18 mo. old but vet narrowed his age down to 2 1/2 when she checked his teeth. I said, "Well, maybe he is part mini." Donkeys come in three sizes....miniature, standard, and mammoth. The vet said, "Either than or malnutrition."

Some donkeys are longer haired than others to begin with. I first got interested in donkeys several years ago when I was trying to take care and help some donkeys that belonged to a man who did not take care of them at all. I tried to buy several of them, but he wouldn't sell them. He adopted five or six donkeys from the BLM Adopt a Burro program. These particular donkeys came from the Sierra Mountains...and they were very long haired.

My donkeys Moses and Hobo, were fairly short haired. Amos is pretty shaggy but finally gets all shedded off in late summer....then he is slick haired for about two weeks and starts growing his winter coat again.

This is Amos when he is all slicked off.

Such a sweet baby. It is interesting to hear about your hobby. My mom had what she called “Molly mules” when she was about 10 (80 years ago). Do you know any thing about them?

Yes, ladypat. Female mules are molly mules. Male mules are called johns. So, my Sabrina mule is a molly.

Doing good. Emery has gained about 100 lb and still needs to gain a couple hundred more, but he looks so much better. I am trying to figure out what kind of horse he is. Now that he is feeling good, he trots around and picks up his feet really high. I have truly enjoyed taking care of him, and bringing him back from a bleak future. I am sure he would have starved to death by now. He wasn't far from it.
