CD FD = Counter Depth French Door.

I think it would be better to change the layout so that you don't pass the cooktop on the way to the fridge. (Think people getting drinks, etc. You don't want them passing by the cooktop while you're cooking.)

Hoping buehl or another layout guru will do a revamp for you.

I think you should move the fridge to the other end of that wall, where the stove is now and then move the stove down. That will allow people to access the fridge without crossing your work zone.

My layout is very similar & the fridge door has never been an issue. Our ovens are right in front of the fridge.

Would you please post a larger view of the downstairs? Trying to figure out relation of kitchen to DR and LR.

I agree that it's a good idea to move the fridge out of the doorway.

The entire 1st floor layout is below, so you know where the DR and everything else is.

Right now we're living in an apartment and the fridge door is constantly in the way of the pantry. We cook at home ALOT, DH and the kids are constantly in the kitchen - either helping me or helping themselves to a snack.

I really like how Damiarain put the fridge at the other end of the kitchen, I can see how it would work where the double oven is also.

You won't be able to open the fridge there anyway. At minimum, swap it with the ovens, but you can do better.

Damiarain is right about fridge location. It should be at the end of the run close to the dining area.

Will you have clients visiting you in your home office? Is that why the powder room is next to the front door?

If not, you might consider flipping it so that it opens into the mudroom. That would give more privacy to anyone using it.

When your kids are playing outside, do you plan to have them use the garage entry to enter the house? If so, swapping the bathroom entry to open into the mudroom will give them a much shorter route from outside to bathroom than you currently have planned.

I agree that the fridge as it's currently placed isn't a great idea. But I also see other log jam factors. You have a garage entry, a kitchen entry, a closet and a pantry all within a short distance from each other. One saving grace: closet doors aren't opened as often as fridge doors but even so, I'd like to see this addressed.

My first take is similar to damiarain's except I did tweaking to the pantry and mudroom to address the concerns I posted above.

What I'm not crazy about is the fridge's bulk next to a window. It will block some light to the counter to its right.

I agree with Sombreuil that a CD fridge is a good idea for your kitchen.

I played with the pantry/mudroom/bathroom area a bit more.

I flipped the coat closet to open into what becomes your back hall so that you can access from the public space or the mudroom. I figured one closet would prevent this conversation: "mom, is my blue jacket in the front closet or the mudroom closet?"

You or your guests won't need to navigate through shoes strew about on the floor next to the mudroom benches.

Mudroom and garage door stay where they were.

I shifted the pantry over and gave it a pair of pocket doors. It would look something like this:

Here's a similarly shaped/sized pantry but with swing doors (I don't recommend).

I highly recommend installing Elfa closet systems instead of fixed shelves. We replaced our our builder supplied fixed shelves about a dozen years ago with Elfa. We knew it would function better but we were thrilled to discover that, because we could tailor it to fit our needs, our pantry's capacity increased about 50%.

I swapped out a standard depth fridge for a counter depth model and eliminated the double ovens column in favor of a speed oven (works as MW, too) under the counter next to the pantry. This gives you a 2nd oven and counter next to your pantry so you have a handy spot for setting down bags of groceries to stock your pantry.

The other thing I did was swap location of DW to the other side of the sink, putting clean-up and dish storage closest to the DR table.

The wheels are still turning so I may come up with another kitchen lay-out for you but it will likely be after the holidays are over.

keep the fridge away from the door and that corner. You'll never get it open without bashing the door/wall.
