Good plant for a bathroom (with window) in zone 2b
Comments (4)Fillagirl. I don't mean to sound disrespecful, but it sounds like you're looking for a plant to match your decor. Google, 'Bromeliad' There are many varieties, from small to large. They're usually sold in bloom. These plants don't shed. Their flowers last from 3 months to a year. Some people toss Bromeliads after the flower dies. On the other hand, as the flower fades, Bromeliads grow side-shoots. The side shoots can be removed and repotted..it takes about 2 yrs for a new bud. I'm assuming you're looking for a plant with little care, so Bromeliad would be perfect. You didn't mention your pots' size..you needn't repot a plant inside your brown pot..just slip a plant with its current pot inside the brown pot. But first place something, 'styrofoam sheet,' etc, inside the bottom of your brown pot, then set plant on top of the styrofoam. This prevents roots from sitting in water. Comments (3)Hi Rita I'm new to the form also but have been gardening for quite a few years already. I haven't done much starting plants from seed as I have recieved lots of plants from relatives and friends. I haven't read up on how you are "supposed" to put a raised bed in but have 2 that are a few years old now. I have never had any problem with quack grass coming through and mine are about the 8-10". I had alot of wild violets were I put my bed and am hoping that the amout of dirt put down first will keep it at bay. I also dug up most of the roots as a way of getting rid of them. I would think the newspaper/cardboard and dirt would do the trick. I put in alot of compost from the cattle mixed with other topsoil from close to the barn area to fill the beds. Good luck gardening! Comments (2)congratulations on starting your own seeds! When I plant seeds in one of those black plastic trays, I put a loose plastic over the top. This is usually the liner from a cereal box cut open so its one layer or something like that. That helps keep the moisture in, and I can see the sprouts when they pop up and remove the plastic. It gets a bit drippy but I figure that keeps them watered. Then the sprouts do best under a flourescent light that is 3 - 4" over their tops. If you can get a cool bulb and a warm bulb its best for the plants as its 'full spectrum' then. We rigged up a shop light fixture on a pulley so i can lift it up and down for watering, growing plants, etc. Have fun with your tomatoes. - Jean in Mt...See MoreHow to dormant mini roses in zone 2b Saskatchewan
Comments (2)Hi Seil! Thanks so much for the reply. I have been growing them under metal hallides, I thinking 400 Watt's. I am not sure as my bf got them from when he built the target store here. They are big and you can see the light they emit all the way down the block. I can't even look at them without being blinded LOL. But boy do they do the trick for alot of my plants. I got my oleander next to the and plan to grow some orchids under them. We made sure the foot candles was far enough away to ensure no scortching of leaves and blooms. I have run these things for about 4 months now and all sorts of things are sprouting up, even my foxtail fern, that i had no idea flowers, formed little white buds. I am on the look out now for a fridge on kijiji but so far no luck. I do want to dormant them, and let them rest but I supposed just to keep them going as you said would be better for them so that they don't struggle. Thanks for the advice!...See Moresunshine (zone 6a, Ontario,Canada)
