In Maine it is standard practice for farmers to protect their crops from wildlife threats. I think most states have laws to help farmers. We are exempt from the season and bag limit thing. With deer and some other game animals you can contact your warden service and they will help. They generally don't want to bother with coon, squirrels, wood chucks, skunks etc. With wild geese you can get a permit to shoot a few and hang up the carcasses and the rest will not come back. For years I shot a crow for pulling up corn. Hung it up and no more problem. I now find light twine over the top of the garden 10 feet in the air also keeps them out. We don't eat coon due to rabies but do trap and kill them to keep them out of the corn. Farmers should always know their rights in protecting their crops! Having said that it is not a good idea to go down to the local coffee shop and brag to animal rights activists that you had to trap 15 coons. Those people do not care about your fruit or garden!

Debrak, you may want to read a bit more about vitamin D before you self medicate with a higher dose. We tend to overdo this stuff in the U.S. From the article linked below: " The US Endocrine Society guidance, for example, advises supplementation with up to 2000 IU per day, but this is overzealous, she said. "A more reasonable dose is 600 to 800 IU per day," she noted, adding that she is an author on a new guidance, soon to be published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, which will state that 2000 IU per day "is not warranted." " The uv wavelength that helps us produce vitamin D is the same that causes aging and skin cancer (with enough exposure). So limited sun exposure is the key. Right now vitamin D is the new fad--- it has replaced the megadoses of vitamins a, e and c, and other supplements that seemingly everyone has been on at one time or another. Update: this thing is still going. I have not taken care of it at all so it's a mess. Apparently the spouse snips it off the walkway and away from the hose. Still no shoots, just the twig I snipped from the parent plant serving as trunk. Is that normal? No matter I guess. It seems happy, unlike its neighbor the kumquat. If I had known this rose wouldn't die I would have put it elsewhere...now I have an issue. :)

I use to see the large slugs on steroids too but they were munching out on petunia plants and trimmed them right to the ground. Seeing they were the huge ones , I had an old meat fork and a flashlight and went on the hunt after dark. Three evenings and a few trips each night and I came back successfully spearing 25 of those ugly suckers. I do believe they are called night crawlers. Tried beer but my husband was on guard with me sneaking his beer and these would have needed a dozen and too damn expense in Canada compared to the US beer. Never thought of a mouse trap ha ha
