Very few chilling hours this winter so far
Comments (7)If you go with Tom Spellman's pics for low chill areas at www.davewilson.com you will be all right. We get reliable crops off our several peach, nectarine, plum, and pluot varieties each year, and successive ripening is the way to go. The blueberries were fantastic and will also ripen in about three weeks for the Sharpblue. Every apple we've tried (dozens of varieties) has also fruited well in under 400 chilling hours. This year we planted the new low-chill cherries too. The days of suffering from lack of fruit because you don't get the cold are over, another reason for half the country to want to move to Southern California, where we can grow oranges, bananas, blueberries, apples, loquats, pineapple, boysenberries, grapes and cherries all in the same yard. It just isn't fair....See MoreWet and cold spring so far.
Comments (2)I'm in a new home build - was planning all winter to have my cold weather veggies in by now. Same horrid weather north of Kingston ON - so much so that I've been unable to even flip much dirt to clean out builder's debris and chopped up roots from the land being shoved around. Very disappointing. Wanted to have my rustic fencing done too - the other day watching hail fly horizontally across the windows, rain and snow I'm afraid I may have lost some newly purchased plants that needed to be planted - grapes, rhubarb, red currant - at least I got my antique roses in the ground. Yep, sucky spring. At least I have my indoor seed starts to play with. And May is black fly season out here - I'm hoping to play catch-up before the strike!...See MoreCold Damage So Far?
Comments (72)In my yard one large crepe mrytle (even though much smaller ones in pots closer to the house are fine) has not leafed out as well as a neem tree and all my vitex and lorapetalum. I lost a total of two salvia which surprised me since I planted many right before the frost and they were pushing my zone a bit. All the other perennials are leafing out again and looking lovely despite this cruel heat and not a drop of rain. It's always a challenge isn't it? Adele...See Moreweird winter...so far....
