exterior wood window trim/casing on brick.

Recently on HGTV Fixer Upper, they did a home where they added a full window trim/casing on the exterior of a brick home. My question is how did they attach the wood trim to the brick? I cannot find any other example of this on the the internet anywhere. I can only find a trim this detailed on a siding exterior. Or wood casing on a brick is strictly window casing inside the brick wall exterior. It’s not on top of the brick. This was an older home remodel so they couldn’t have prepped for it in the brick work. However, we will be building new so I can prep for it if need be. I’ve included an Instagram screenshot of the house I’m referencing.

Knowing HGTV, they probably used Liquid Nails. Buncha hacks.

Then have your designer correctly integrate it into the design and don't concern yourself with how it was done for TV.

I don't think it will look weird; we have that set up in our house. Our window trim is fairly developed but our interior doors just have basic trim. The exterior doors - like our french doors and front door - do match our window trim, however. The previous owners did the trim so I'm not sure what their methodology was, but I like it!

Ordinarily the brick molding goes in before the stucco is applied. The stucco is applied up to the brick molding. Talk to your installer. The trim is usually part of the install.

A bit of prep work, some bondo and caulk should do the trick. More than likely you have lead based paint, might want to take proper precautions.

The look is DARK so I would go a shade darker with your trims. What you do with the house you match the car port. As far as wood walkways...I would look for a paint with texture so it's not slippery when wet. That's is a lot of maintenance. When you have the time I would replace wood walk way with pavers of some sort.

But how does one properly integrate it? Even if we’re not doing it ourselves, we would like to know that it’s being done correctly and we’re not being set up for rotten window casing later on. Is this something every architect will know about? The lack of info on this technique is what puzzles me.

I really like Fixer Upper. But, I do not believe in everything the Gaines do in remodeling. His structural rough framing is quite good, as far as I can see. But, some things he does would not work well in a different climate than Texas.

Adding trim against a brick/rock wall can be done several ways. Pressure treated wood should be used to minimize wood rot. Plain construction lumber can fail in just a couple of years.

The larger problem is the fact wood moves more than brick/rock, to it is pretty difficult to trim long term without problems. Added to that is the fact many bricks used in housing are hygroscopic, meaning they absorb moisture.

The best way depends on the climate in which the house is in. Cool, wet climates( Western Washington/Oregon/SoCal) means trim should be plastic(Azek), since there is really no good way to mount wood and seal it against the damp.

In hot climates(South and West US), wood will expand and contract enough to also be a problem. However, plastic expands more than wood.

In the rest of the US, cold/snow in winter and hot/wet in summer pose the same problems.

Installing can be done several ways(all allowing for the problems to a greater or lesser degree).

Drill holes in the brick/mortar lines and use anchors/screws. Or glue in wood/plastic dowels and use nails/screws(the wood dowels will fail at some point in moist climates). Use concrete screws(Tapcons) or powder actuated fasteners(worst choice!!!). Or construction masonry adhesive.

Lots of ways to do that, but none are really long term jobs.
