Are accent walls, using a different color, still in style?

Part of my house is remodeled and is using an Almond White and dark grey colors. I want to continue to use these two colors throughout the house. The dark grey is too dark for walls but I though I might be able to use a lighter version of the grey on one wall as an accent wall in our livingroom and/or bedroom. I would use the Almond White on the other walls. I'm worried that this isn't in style or will soon get old. Suggesstions?

I think there are pretty patterned items [rugs, pillows] with the 2 together. Shouldn't be a problem. Do you like satiny metal finishes for gleam? Medium Gray, Blush, Tan, Black, Cream Medallions and Damask for $30.

Delicate, sort of feminine look?

I was at the bank a couple weeks ago and I noticed they had done it in their little office rooms. Two walls were a lighter shade; the back wall (opposite the door and the "guest seat") and the wall next to the desk (to the right of the "guest seat") were both a shade or two darker. It was subtle, I would NEVER have noticed if I had not been in there for an entire hour ;-) Great little trick for a small room!!! I'm thinking of doing it in our middle bedroom to make it appear larger, mainly because I need to touch up several spots on those two walls anyway (opposite the door and adjacent to the door). And when we paint our master bedroom, I'll apply the technique there as well ... all our bedrooms are small.

My3dogs, yes I’ve changed my mind on the turquoise, or at least this ribbon. :) Yes, I agree. With chalk painted cabinets I don’t care for the ribbon with it. But if the cabinets were solid white and the walls pale turquoise, I’d like it. I just don’t want white. In my experience white cabinets don’t hold up as well. Pale gray may work. But again, this ribbon would be like putting chrome next to brushed nickel. ;) When I say farmhouse, I’m not going for full out farmhouse look. Just a nod.

We want a lounge chaise (instead of meeting chairs) facing the desk because I do a lot of reading and document review and a mirrored map that we have above that. Shelves on the other walls wouldn’t really fit since we have the window on one wall and then the double doors open into the office so it takes up the wall across from the window

I sometimes do colored accent walls to actually accent a piece of art or bring a color from something in the space to make that color make sense. I take a long time to add them so I just paint everything one color and then do all the furniture , art everything else into the space and then decide if an accent wall is needed.This wall I for whatever reason seemed to think it needed to be that purple color and now 6 yrs later I think it needs to go back to gray. Its just paint .

As long as the correct wall is chosen to be the accent, it is fine and can be very cool.

While there are exceptions to every rule, these are usually true:

Accent the headboard wall in a bedroom, accent the focal wall in a living/dining space (this is the wall your eye is naturally drawn to in the room). Not many kitchens benefit from accent walls (there is already a lot going on it a kitchen), bathrooms/mud rooms/laundry rooms are usually not ideal places for accent walls (due to a lot going on and the rooms are generally small). The exception to this is a guest/half bath sometimes can be a show piece with an accent wall.

Accent walls are more a matter of personal taste and the architecture/style of the home than a trend that is "in" or "out". If it works, it works.

It's PAINT. Meaning pretty easy to apply, and easy to make disappear. Accent walls have been done, done, and done again. I see no reason for them in most cases. But. It's your home........and yup......its PAINT.
