Paint Design Dilemma

Are painted accent walls in style now?

We have 24' foot walls and one with a ledge and are looking to break up the main color and wondered if painting the lower part of the wall that has the ledge would date the home?

Those walls are all beautiful--but in the back of my mind I always remember that every time I add "texture", I add another bump, edge, or groove that needs dusting :(

Generally accent walls make a house feel less cohesive/ more disjointed. The fails outnumber the ones that work. If you post photos people may have more advice for you.

In general, I do not recommend accents walls. But, if you can post a photo, I could give you better advice.

I thought it was a great idea until I saw the wall in question. The room is quite asymmetrical as far as doors, windows, and fireplace placement, and one accent wall would add to that chaos. Instead, I would concentrate on trying to bring order and symmetry with colors and furnishings. The colors you're using are beautiful and restful, and I'd add a creamy white for the trim and do a less rustic wood mantel in the same white. You may even want to dab thinned out white paint on the orange red bricks of your fireplace to give it a more muted palette. Love your rug and the curtains soccermom posted above, especially that first color! That same turquoise could be incorporated in a club chair, or leather ottomans, etc.. What sofa will go in that room?

We want a lounge chaise (instead of meeting chairs) facing the desk because I do a lot of reading and document review and a mirrored map that we have above that. You have no wall to accent. Every wall has something on it, an accent wall should be solid. I don't think your furniture goes with a blue/green ikat style rug. Post a picture of the rug. NO gray walls. Gray will not complement your floor and cabinets.

Yep, this is entire furniture set I’m getting, plus the drapes. I didn’t know if the navy would make it too much especially with the drapes. As you can see… it’s super traditional and dramatic style furniture. I was hoping charcoal would add a modern mix to it plus the art I use to achieve that look.

I personally like an accent wall if it's done properly. In my eyes, it's more than just painting a wall a contrasting color.

If I understand, you are thinking about painting the wall up to the mantel one color, and the wall above a different color. I wouldn't do it.

I sometimes do colored accent walls to actually accent a piece of art or bring a color from something in the space to make that color make sense. I take a long time to add them so I just paint everything one color and then do all the furniture , art everything else into the space and then decide if an accent wall is needed.This wall I for whatever reason seemed to think it needed to be that purple color and now 6 yrs later I think it needs to go back to gray. Its just paint .
