You are killing it with kindness! In nature the ancestors grow in tropical Monsoonal Climates where there is a wet season and a dry(er) season. The dry season in general is still warm especially by day and humidity is lower. Those ancestors grow on a rock or a tree and the roots get wet and then they dry. The roots are not growing in something like spag. that never dries out. I was trying to find the thread where Jane who used to live in NY posted pictures of her hard-cane Dendrobiums. Couldn't find it but it is on the page 1 somewhere. The conditions in your growing area cannot be too bad because the plant has bloomed and the flower didn't drop off. Follow what Bob said and see how you go. Forget about all this misting stuff. Water thoroughly and let dry is the go unless you are trying to grow cloud forest orchids.

Nick: Extrafloral nectaries (=nectar sources outside the flower) are widespread in the plant kingdom. There are 50 genera of orchids that have them, including Arachnis and Vanda, two of the three genera that make up Mokara. They are universally associated with attracting ants. The ants can protect the plants, supply nutrients (in the form of fecal waste) or benefit the plant in a number of other ways. You're right about orchids being stingy with their nectar. That suggests how important ants are to the success of orchids. It's an example of "quid pro quo." There is an excellent description of "myrmcophily" (=ant-love) in wikipedia, especially the section on "Ant-plant interactions." (Aphids are never mentioned.) I would say it takes mine about 6 weeks from spike emergence until the first flower opens, on average. They're fairly slow, but OTOH I had one that opened the first flower in late March, and the last one fell on the 4th of July. I guess some probably are slower than others, and I suppose temp and other factors affect it as with any plant. Yes, continue to water for sure, don't know about fertilizer.

Quicky question : the night Temps here might drop soon to about 40F ( +3- +4C), but 55-65F daytime (about +15C).. Should I bring my Cyms inside for the night? We dont have freezing temps yet.. MG
