Paw Paw Seeds for Trade

I have some Shenandoah paw paw seeds, pollinated by a Susquehanna, that have already been vernalized and are ready to plant. I am going to germinate them in pots this spring. I can trade the seeds or later the plants. Make an offer.

Karen - One thing you can do to speed up the fruiting process is called "six and pinch." On each branch when there are 6-7 leaves, pinch of the end with your fingers. That will cause early fruit development and resultant early fruit ripening also. Lets talk in the spring about some trades. I have celeste, brown turkey, nero Italian, black mission, hardy Chicago, and one fig that I don't know the identity of. This year I am also trying to grow purple Italian artichokes. I planted my purple Italian artichokes in cups, 2 per cup, on January 14, 2018 and place them in my small indoor greenhouse that I have in my basement. I placed a root warmer under them and placed 2 daylight quality fluorescent shop lights over them. I plugged the electricity in 12 hours per day. Today, January 24, 2018, they have begun to germinate. It will now be about 8 weeks until I begin the hardening process and about 9-10 weeks before I set them out in the garden.

Hi, I would like to try paw paws in this area (NY near the Canadian border and Lake Champlain where weather moderation usually prevents super cold). I understand the Wells variety is pretty large and excellent tasting. Let's see, what could I trade that you probably don't already have: - ginseng seeds - a few bloodroot plants, pretty white flower and unusual foliage. Sanguinaria produces an antibacterial and has an effect like morphine - used by Am. indians to paint war markings. - elderberry or highbush cranberry cuttings - grow about 8' tall and produce clusters of flowers and berries. Elderberries make good jelly. Highbush cranberrries are not true cranberries, but they can make the same tasting cranberry sauce, a little more tart maybe. - wintergreen - a small groundcover plant that has an unusual tasting red berry like wintergreen lozenges - In the late spring I could send plants of a local nursery strawberry. That's when mine make runners. It's from Pray's Farm and comes in very early. They won't tell what it is a hybrid of because they want the market. So I don't know that info. It's not a huge berry, average size, but very tasty and the plants are extremely prolific, producing 5-10 plants from each original. Some of the runners have 2 and three new plants, and they all take. - I have starter McIntosh apple trees that are looking very healthy. Any of that sound interesting? Connie -- Are you looking for Southern California Black Walnut (Juglans californica) or Northern California Black Walnut (Juglans hindsii)? There are a couple of wild trees near me. I haven't quite figured out which of the two they are, but next time I go walking there, I can bring a leaf sample home and give it a go at IDing it.

Danielle - I have Egyptian walking onions, cuttings of Russian pomegranate that has done well in zone 7a, and paw paw seeds. From your list, I would be interested in alyssum, nasturtium, Peppers-(poblano, jalapeño, Serrano, Marconi red), and dwarf pomegranate cuttings.

I have been looking to add a paw paw tree to my garden. Do you know how long will it take the seed to get to a fruiting tree? I have Letitia and Negronne figs for trade if you are interested. THanks.

You will need 2 paw paw trees of a different variety for pollination. From seed to fruit is about 5-7 years. I still have not planted the seeds, so I could send some for the figs if you are interested. Are the figs cuttings? My figs were frozen down to the ground this year in Northern VA, so I don't foresee getting any cuttings until they grow back.

I did not realize that it takes that long for a paw paw tree to fruit. I will have to pass on them. I think all my figs branches have died due to the past freeze too. I can send you a fig division when spring comes for postage. Letitia is a great fig, large, early bearing, and sweet though can't say the same for Negronne. I have to grow Negronne in a pot because it fruits too late for the figs to ripen before cold weather hits.

Wow, thanks for the tip, Charlie! I have no idea. I have grown this fig Negronne for 3 years now but the fruits don't ripen fast enough before the first freeze. I was hoping that they would this past year since it did get an early start due to the mild winter. But nope! I definitely would be interested to trade this Negronne and Letitia for your black mission and Nero Italian figs if you have available this spring. Thanks.
