Tiny yellow spots on leaves
Comments (6)I get rust on my roses and I'm located about 50 miles inland. Summer is scorching hot here with many days over 100 degrees, with over 110 not uncommon. The air is very dry unless its raining (and we don't get much!). Here is one of my roses that gets rust. Archduke Charles. I bought him last year and planted him in a prime spot with full sun. He mildewed and rusted to such an extant that I couldn't stand looking at the diseased foliage. So I shovel-pruned him and replaced him last year with a rose (Irish Hope) that even in the same location has completely clean leaves (and I don't spray my roses). I didn't have the heart to destroy Archduke Charles. Rather I put him in a pot placed in partial sun in a rare spot that stays damp, wedged between a shrub and a tree. I reasoned he does well in the south and thus would be happier in a more humid environment. This year the mildew is greatly reduced but the rust is currently increasing, which is what happened last year at about the same time. Blooms can be pretty: The same leaf, top: and bottom: More leaves: I think Jeri may have Archduke Charles but hers is clean-leaved. Yet she is near the coast. So go figure! This rose might be expected to be clean in my area, but it certainly isn't. I have plenty of other roses that have no rust at all ever. Even roses in close proximity to ones that rust. Comments (6)The rust can quickly go through. Years ago, they used to sell small bolts with rubber washers to patch these kinds of holes, but because todays enamaled pots are not glazed as thick as years ago, they simply don't last as long anymore. The thickness of the metal used is also a lot thinner. If you have the $$ suggest that you invest in either a large aluminium pot or stainless steel. Even the wire racks tend to rust and these discolor everything. The wire rack that Kitchen Krafts sells is stainless and lasts a long time. The addition of a small aount of vinegar in the canning water helps to reduce calcium buildup, but has a negative effect on rust. Adding the veg oil to the rust spot will not help unless the rusted area is totally dry and has no trapped moisture. Coating with an oil can only encourage moisture to remain and make the rust spread wider and deeper. Not much can be done once the pot rusts at the bottom....See MorePale foliage and rust spots?
Comments (3)Older leaves can develop spots just due to age, and you say this one is a full season old. It does not appear chlorotic (yellowed), but it does not look happy. And it's very small. My first thought is that it is in poor soil and is over-watered. One thing that bothers me is the foil-wrapped pot, reminiscent of drowned holiday poinsettias. Wet soil will kill part of the roots, restricting the ability of the plant to take up water making it appear to be under-watered -> a vicious cycle when a caring mother is factored in. Get rid of the foil wrapping, put a plate under it to protect your woodwork, and let it dry out before next watering. Second, how much light does it get? Peppers are high-energy plants that want as much sunlight as they can get. Four hours a day through a UV-filtered window might keep them alive, but barely. Comments (3)I think it depends on the amount of the iron content of the stone. However, I believe that with thorough sealing to prevent moisture from getting to the area you should be able to control the rust spots....See MoreBrice
